What is the best tip up set up to use for ice fishing pike? (i.e line, hooks, bait, etc)
Pike Ice Fishing Tips
Just freezing them doesn’t comply with WDNR dead bait regulations. Those came into effect a few years ago as part of the effort to slow down the spread of VHS.
More info here:
Just freeze em.
What is everyone doing for dead bait preservation? I have a batch of 9-10" minnows in rubbing alcohol but no fish on them yet. Dont have a lot of confidence in them personally, feel like the alcohol scent would be off putting to fish.
Is there a brand of hot dogs people like best? Going to try this!
A big tasty brat might excite them monsters too! Lol It’s always worth the try!!

Ulbian- great post, good info.....
Sounds like I should try it!!!
I totally agree with Reba’s Daddy when it comes to using hot dogs late season. The cheapest, oilyest, dogs that would kill ya if you ate em all the time, work best. I snip the ends off to release more scent. Great for big pike. The only reason I don’t use them more is that you will never get a bass or walleye on them.
Don’t throw out those dead large shiners in late winter. I rip open the belly, pull the guts out to hang and hook in the back so the shiner hangs naturally horizontal one foot off the bottom. Do just as good or better in February as I do with live shiners
I’ve never used anything but shiners. Most of the places I fish I’m targeting pike and bass (I fish with my boy so it’s a numbers game).
I use 30# flouro leaders with a single treble hook.
That said, I’m interested in trying dead bait. What exactly do you guys use and where so you get it?
