I suggest you purchase a rifle that has affordable ammo that is readily available. I suggest .308, 30-06, .270. If you reload, you have more options but you should consider brass availability.

I have a Sako 30.06.Great gun but now I would much prefer a shorter action cartridge such as the 308. or 7mm08. If I did it all over again it would be the 7mm.08. Same case as a 3.08 but necked down to 7mm.Mrt.

I personally like the 30-06. I have a ruger mark II and swear by it. The newer ruger american looks intriguing and is affordable

.300 ultra mag you can kill anything with and it will drop in its tracks but all the calibers you mentioned will get the job done as well

I shoot a .280 browning, great civilized round and knockdown only drawback is rounds can be hard to come by-it is chambered and also will shoot 7mm express (not mag)but also hard to come by

I shoot a 7mm08. Awesome caliber .. Shot placement is more important than caliber.. 30.06 is a great caliber . I have shot more deer with my trusty marlin 30-30 than any other though... Shot placement is the key I harvested this guy in adams county with my remington 700 in 7mm08 at 150 yrds in 2014

Just got myself a Remington 700 ADL w/scope chambered in .270 for xmas for about $450 new at Cabelas. The oldest boy got my old rifle, a Remington 760 30.06 pump. I've taken a lot of deer with that rifle and never really needed a second shot. My youngest shoots a Remington 700 ADL chambered in .243. He has taken 2 deer with that and both dropped in their tracks. Basically most of your common deer sized calibers will shoot out to 200 yds without a problem. I think if you're shooting long range than you can be more picky about calibers but under 200yds .243,.308,.270,30.06... etc will all do the job pretty equally. Shot placement is the key. As far as scopes go, you can spend $100 on one or you can spend $1,000 on one depends on budget and personal preference really. I'd say look at some in your price range and see what you like.

all pretty similar and all will work. bullet construction is what is important. use the right bullet for the particular animal your hunting and all will be good.

For the last 70 + years every time a "New" deer cartridge comes out it gets compared to the 30'06. It is my usual choice in a M700. When I am on the move and need quicker handling I use the .444 with custom loads (HP's).

Right now its open hard woods that I hunt. 150/200 yards would be about the max dissents I would be shooting. I always used a 20ga. This year I took my grandpa's 30/30.and did just fine with that. But I got my kids that want to use the 30/30 now. Lol and I got the ok from the wardens (wife) to buy a new rifle so I am. Lol

What kind of area do you hunt. Open fields swamp or standing timber. Ask your friends that you hunt with. If not check with your local gun dealer. 0

Gotacarp You need to give more info.....you don't need a 270, 280, or 3006, you could use 243, 308, 3030....or many other calibers.....what is it you hunt for areas, what range do you expect to shoot at, I have hunted with many calibers, some work better than others in certain circumstances.

Muskrat: cannot argue with a VX-3. 2.5 x 8. I have one on a .270. My 2x7 is on a 7x57; I also have 2 VX-3s 1.5 x5 and a 1.75 x 6. All good WI scopes.
