Downrigger line problem

Here's a reaI newbie questions. I am new to salmon fishing and recently added two Canon downriggers to my setup. (Have boards and leadcore--dipsies) Have Canon Unitroll 10's--manuals. I've had trouble with the cable looping or coming off the downrigger wheel/spool when I try to put spoons or flashers out and getting caught it caught between the "wheel" and the downrigger side plate. Any tricks to keep the wire taught and on the wheel? Or even how to get it back on the wheel easily? Will this line coming off the wheel decrease as I use the units more--just like line on a spinning reel?

Also--How many of you use rubber bands to line and release? I have Power Pro on my rods. Should I be using mono on rigger rods?

just a silly idea, but when you put the unitrolls together...if you put the pulley on the end of the boom on backwards...it will cause the cable to bind, and will allow slack in the cable...further causing it to loop and bind. just an idea.

I would recomend blacks releases, they have them at fleet farm work real slick and dont have to waste time with rubber bands. As for the cable issue seems kind of weird we have the unitrolls and that has never happend with ours. Some guys have gone away with wire on the riggers and use a heavier power pro line for thier riggers, guess it causes less blowback, maybe that is a option.

don't know exactly what your doing wrong but the downrigger weight should keep the cable tight no matter what you run on them. unless the cable is getting caught in something while your putting it down. i know a few guys that use rubber bands all the time but the only time i run them is on my 12 pound rigs.
