St. Croix or Fenwick?

I am looking for a medium power backup spinning rod. I am leaning toward a St. Croix Triumph or a Fenwick Eagle GT. Any thoughts? Other suggestions? That $60 - $80 price range os where I would like to be. I have a St. Croix Premier right now that I am in love with so I am leaning toward the Triumph, but I am curious to get some feedback on Fenwick as well. thank you !!!

if you can bump up to $100.00 price range the new abu garcia veritas is a great value, titanium guides with SiC inserts, no other rod under $100.00 offers those componets at that price point.

Fenwick HMG with Hardaloy guides over Premier. Legend Elite over anything else.

That's actually not correct. The Triumph WAS made in China and are now made in Mexico, not saying that's any better. Smile Although they're built in a factory that's almost an exact replica of the one in Park Falls

Here's my .02 Fenwick rods are stiffer the St. Croix. St. Croix has a wider range of rod options. I have a feeling the "new" guides on Fenwick are no break through in technology but a cost savings to Berkley. By the way, Pure Fishing owns Fenwick, Berkley, All Star, Stren, Abu Garcia and many others. Fenwick Rods are now a Mass produced "Overseas" manufactured rod. Made with material manufactured "overseas" Does this mean their quality is less than St. Crois?? maybe? maybe not? I choose to buy one made in Wisconsin. And I like their product line... A Lot. My personal preference is to spend my money in the U.S.A. to help those who have jobs working at St.Croix. With the hopes that just one of the St.Croix employees reads this...gets it....and chooses to spend their money by purchasing a product made in the U.S.A. over one made "overseas" Even if it costs a bit more. Save up another $20 and buy another Premier. You'll be happy you did and so will another American.

I purchased a new HMG this year and compared to the Triump I like it much better - plus they have a lifetime warranty vs 5 years. I will admit I do not have a high dollar St Croix - I would like one - but for $100+ I would still by another HMG.

I have two premiers and an HMG Flippin stik triggerstick. They're great rods. Didn't like the feel of the heavy mojo bass froggin stick, so I got the Fenwick. I love my St croix Premiers light, sensitive, tough, and made here in WI.

ANY St. Croix??? I dunno.

I do know that it does amount to personal preference. St. Croix does have a TON of rods to choose from, and many different lengths and actions within each length. But Fenwick makes some nice sticks. I tend to prefer their action across the lineup, more than Croix.

I will say that I have a Fenwick HMG and I believe it to be superior rod to a St Croix at a similar price point, which I believe would be Croix's premier. Not a fair fight in my opinion, but that's just me.

I agree with b3kice that the HMX isn't better than any Croix but for the price range the original poster was considering, I believe he would be much happier with a Fenwick than a Croix. Comparing the two makes in that price range (HMX and Triumph) I would definitely give the nod to Fenwick.

The HMX is a better rod then any st croix. The HMG is even better but for the money a HMX is better then any St Croix.

Are you serious? Better than ANY Croix? The HMX or HMG aren't even in the same galaxy as the Croix LT, Xtreme, or Elite series.

Hands down Fenwick. The HMX is a better rod then any st croix. The HMG is even better but for the money a HMX is better then any St Croix. my two cents. Plus warranty related problems go with a fenwick......

I'm a Huge St.Croix Premier fan as well. Best rod for the money IMO. The Fenwick seems to be a bit stiffer apples for apples. I'd buy St.Croix. But I'm also a fan of U.S.A. products. I believe Fenwick is now owned by a London (westminster) based family

I've got a Techna AV and one of the new Elite Techs. The smaller grip on the ET is definitely smaller than the AV, but its alright. I prefer my big fat cork on the AV. Its just like an St. Croix Avid.

I also just picked up a Lamiglass 8'6". That thing has suuuuper skinny foregrips like a girl would prefer. Seriously the diameter at the grip is like a 1/4" thicker than the blank. No offense to girls, but it looks like a chic's rod grip. I'll either be having it fixed or putting some wrap on there.

The Elite Tech is between the AV and the Lami for foregrip thickness.
