If you are going to use a spinning reel for pike use a larger size.I prefer a 3000 to 4000 Stradic, mostly because I have found that for pike you will use larger some times harder pulling lures and a larger reel with its larger gears hold up better. My pike set up is a 4000 with 30lb braid and a 7ft mh rod.You are set on a spinning reel but a baitcaster is more versatile, that just my opinion.
I've had good luck with & really like the Okuma spinning reel I bought. It's the Epixor model with the 2nd drag for live bait or trolling. The 2nd drag is lighter than the main & allows fish to take line when they hit. You'll hear the drag and can respond using this method. I've come to use it primarily when fishing large suckers for pike but it will work with lures when trolling. With large suckers and power line it has worked great for me. You feel that first run and they can take all the line they need until you start to reel, whihc sets the primary drag. Okuma is not the only one to make this type of 2nd drag, I think Diawa does too. But I've been happy with mine & will soon pick up another as my boys are starting to show interest in pike.

Ive been there 12 or 13 times, I can't remember. I use a Shimano Stradic in the 4000 size. I would suggest a 3000 or 4000 size, laced up with a braid line of your choice. Almost any flashy lure will work well. My experience has taught me NOT to use anything with treble hooks! You will spend more time doing face surgery on the pike than fishing if you use trebles. I'd suggest spinnerbaits with a trailer, nothing smaller than 4/0. Just my opinion. Good luck and take pictures!
I agree on the smaller reel. I run 14# Fireline on a size 30 Pfleuger - pick the model that fits you.
To me one of the biggest advantages of super lines is that I can downsize my reels to save weight.
Planning on throwing 1/2 to 1 oz.lures and spoons mostly, a few spinnerbaits and if all else fails maybe trolling. Will be fishing the last week of August. As far as line goes, I am completely open and confused with all of the available options...any suggestions re the line will also be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Bluejay Bert.
What kind of line do you plan on running? Mono? Flourocarbon? Superline? What pound test?
What rod will you be using, a MH (hopefully!)? What are you planning on throwing at the pike, heavier spoons, or what?
A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, as the saying goes. If you have a MH rod (3/8-1 oz.) and want to run superline, 15-20 lb. test should be plenty. There's no particular benefit to going to heavier line that exceeds the rod's capability.
The reel should be able to hold @ 100-120 yards of whatever line you choose. For Shimano or Daiwa reels, 4000 size are commonly used, for Quantum or Pflueger, size 40 are popular.
