Large Green Nut Tree-What is it??

I noticed the deer this weekend relating to some trees that have some very large green fruit on them. They are soft skinned and you can open them up and there is a nut inside. They have a fairly sweet aroma when broken open. The green fruit part is almost the size of a tennis ball and there are quite a few on the trees. Anyone know what kind of trees they are?

They are not bitternut hickory as I know what those are, the deer were really in those trees too. Thanks for the help in identifying this food source!!

Did you really see the deer feeding on them? I've got a ton of black walnuts on my place and I have yet to see a deer feed on any

Thanks guys. Sounds like black walnut for sure, it was down around Madison and it did have a minty/lemony smell.

It depends on where darboy was hunting. If in his area then yes probobly black walnut. If north of say hwy 64 I'd say butternut, a.k.a.white walnut....paddy

Walnut for sure. On a side note they are fun to hit with a baseball bat...especially when green.

Sound like Black Walnut. If they smell something between 'lemony' and 'minty', then thats it for sure.
