Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce

Bergland, MI
Welcome to Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce Western Upper Penninsula of Michigan

13,380 Acres of Lake

Lake Gogebic is over 13,000 acres of pristine water, with 36 miles of shoreline. This area is a four-season gem - still undiscovered by many. Nestled within the Ottawa National Forest, Lake Gogebic is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan's largest inland lake located in the far western end of the Upper Peninsula. Lake Gogebic itself is in two counties and in two time zones. The north half of Lake Gogebic is in Ontonagon County, Bergland Township, and the Eastern Time zone. The south half of the lake is in Gogebic County, Marenisco Township, and the Central Time zone.

The Best Fishing

In 13,380 acres of prime fishing water, Lake Gogebic offers walleye, small mouth bass, northern pike, jumbo perch and some whitefish. With shores that range from sandy to rocky to clay banks, you'll always be challenged. Learn to read the lake and how to use the right fishing method in the right place for the big reward. Throughout the season, the Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce hosts a tagged fish contest with thousands of dollars in prizes.

Excellent Hunting

This region is also a prime hunting hot spot for deer, bear, small game and birds. Enjoy the spectacular autumn colors while out walking through the woods. See what other wildlife you can spot. Perhaps the elusive wolf, the rare moose and many, many others.

Area Adventures

Families will enjoy Lake Gogebic's summer water sports, camping, sightseeing and hiking the surrounding timberland. The area is full of historic sites and history. Spend time hiking to any of many waterfalls in our area to witness some true beauty. See how much wildlife you can spot on the way! Biking, ATVs and walking are a way of life.

Our Weather

Winter is a "world of its own" as snowfall has been back up to about 300 inches a year. And it looks like we may surpass that amount this year! Lake Gogebic is situated within a vast snowmobile trail system extending throughout the Upper Peninsula. Cross country ski trails are abundant and five major downhill ski facilities are less than a hour's drive. It is a great place to use snowshoes.

The evenings are often full of Northern Lights and a wolf's cry. The dress is casual and the attitudes are friendly. Bring sweaters for summer evenings and expect beautiful warm days. Winters can be harsh and fall is cool, but the seasons are amazing..

Come wander through our Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce website and see how it is to be in paradise. Better yet - make Lake Gogebic your next destination and see for yourself! Discover what our area has to offer.

Enjoy Silent Sports

Lake Gogebic has several bays and streams coming into the lake, making it an ideal spot for kayakers. There are also several public areas where kayakers can access the lake: the Bergland Bay, two County Parks and one State Park along the west shore of the lake, along with several businesses which would allow access for kayakers to gain entrance to the lake. Although kayak rentals are fairly new to the Lake Gogebic area, local rentals are available.

Navigable water maps are available with a rental. Look for streams coming into the lake along most shores, but especially at the south end of the lake on the Slate River or the Merriweather Creek at the northwest corner. Viewing blue herons, multiple duck breeds, bald eagles, beaver, otter along with a host of other air and water wild life are just a few of the sites that make this "silent sport" so popular.
