  • Biking - With over 800 miles of paved roads and not one traffic light, Bayfield County is a great place to ride. Did we mention the beauty, the rolling hills and views of Lake Superior and the National Forest? The North Coast Cycling Association (NCCA) is a great resource for information on scenic rides throughout the region.

  • Horseback Riding - There are plenty of places available for horseback riding. The Horseshoe Lake Saddle Trail even has an equestrian-friendly campground at Horseshoe Lake.
  • Ski - Come try one of our many cross country ski trails - we have plenty to choose from - or hit the slopes at Mt. Ashwabay (fun terrain park, too!).
  • Snowmobile - We have over 600 miles of groomed trails and over 1000 miles of ungroomed forest roads for your riding pleasure.

Fishing

Bayfield County is one of the most scenic fishing destinations in the country. Fishing the Big Lake is certainly a draw, but many anglers are surprised and happy to realize that within an hour drive of Superior's shores, there is some of the finest inland lake fishing Northern Wisconsin has to offer on lakes like Namekagon, Owen, the Pike Chain, Eau Claire Chain, and many smaller waters. Fly anglers can fish any of the Big Lake's tributaries, including the world famous Brule, or try an inland trout stream such as the White or Namekagon rivers.

  • WINTER Early ice on Lake Superior offers great shallow-water fishing for a multitude of species. By late January, deepwater "bobbing" for Lake Trout out in the Apostle Islands begins.
  • SPRING Peak opportunities for spring fishing are in May. Inland fishing also heats up with the spawning seasons and relatively easy fishing close to shore.
  • SUMMER Summertime is Lake Trout time on Superior. Trollers head out into the Apostle Islands, South Shore, and the flats east of Madeline Island. Inland lakes are fun to explore and fish all summer long.
  • FALL Fall is one of the best times to fish -the lakes are less crowded and fish start feeding well in preparation for winter. Stream fishing gets good for big, mature fish.

Hunting

There's over 430,000 acres of public access between National, County and State land. With a little scouting, this area offers an opportunity for all types of hunting. The forest management plan contributes to the habitat that provides excellent upland hunting for ruffed grouse and woodcock. Lake Superior is a big draw for migratory waterfowl, including many species of ducks and geese. Of course, you'll also find whitetail deer, turkey, bear and small game.

Rain in the forecast? There are still lots of ways to have fun in the rain! See our list of Rainy Day Activities for ideas. Farmer's markets are fun to visit and a great place to pick up fresh, local food for picnics or to take home!
