How To Clean Fish Like A Pro

Follow these tips and you'll clean a mess of fish fast.

by Lake-Link Staff

Whether you're cleaning your very first fish or you feel like you're an ol' pro, no one relishes the task of cleaning a bucket full of fish.

What do we envision? All of those fish are magically cleaned and ready to put in the fryer for the best fish meal ever.

Well, here's the next best thing.

In a new video by Rapala®, Captain Paul Powis provides a step-by-step guide on how to fillet a walleye like a pro. Follow these tips and you'll clean a mess of fish fast.

As a licensed guide since 1989, knows what he speaks, having filleted so many walleye throughout his career, he couldn't tell you how many he's filleted. As the owner of J&P Fishing Charters and Guide Services, based out of Kitchener, Ontario, Captain Paul has been putting anglers on giant Lake Erie walleye and rainbow trout out of his 27-foot guide boat. His favorite words? "Fish on!" coming out of the mouths of his loyal customers.

The secret to filleting fish like is a pro boils down to maximizing the freshness of fillets through proper fish care, properly setting up your filleting station to fit, and using the best tools – in this case, a Rapala R12 Heavy-Duty Lithium Fillet Knife combo or a razor-sharp Rapala Fish 'N Fillet Knife.

"Most of the time people are catching walleye they want them for table fare," said Powis, "so treat them like food and they will taste that much better when you cook them up."

"The R12 is a beast of a knife and it will cut through a lot of fish in a hurry," added Powis, who relies on the knife to clean for his guided charter trip clients.

Besides filleting walleye, the legendary Lake Erie fishing guide and long-time Rapala pro offers a load of other tips, including tips on fish preparation, fillet storage, and how to select the right fillet knife to meet your needs.
