In-line sinkers (keel sinkers) work well if you are using lighter tackle and trolling in water that is not too deep. Try using spoons or stick baits behind the sinker. Another very successful method when the water is calm is to jig straight down in deeper water with a sweedish pimple, cast master or similar spoon. The trick is to make sure you are completely vertical and bounce the spoon off the bottom then bring it up 4-5 feet. If you are drifting or trying to cast, this method does not work well. We also use cut bait usually chunks of sucker 1-2 inches. We used to bring frozen smelt, but that is no longer allowed in most of Ontario. Suckers can be caught or a lot of the camp hosts will have these for sale or in the freezer. If using cut bait, I use an egg sinker in line with a very small split shot 12-18 inches from the hook to stop the egg sinker from sliding all the way up to the hook. When a fish takes it, they can pull out a little line before you set the hook. Hope this helps.
I have never been to this lake but I can tell you what works on lake nipigon this time of year. Downriggers with a white or silver dodger with a big white and silver pro king spoon with yellow or red eye. I usually go out to a main part of the lake, mark them on my locator, lower my downriggers to that depth and wham fish on!
Hope that helps. Have a good trip
