Got out for a bit this morning before the storms, tried a couple spots and found my sheephead friends.
Spot #2 was more productive with a couple of 23" fish.I was trolling in about 18 fow. Both fish hammered the bait and were released.
I have been out on the bay quite a bit this spring with moderate results. I am new to the bay and am happy that I at least feel confident that I can catch a couple on each trip. Strangely all of my fish so far have been 22.5 to 28. Nothing that I consider good eating size or smaller. That makes me a little nervous for the future of the population.
Maybe it is my technique or where I am fishing. I see alot of talk and shows about fishing suspended fish on the mud flats. I am anxious to try this technique but I am guessing because of the cold spring this is pushed back like everything else.
I am not a harvester, nothing against that at all as long as it's done legally. I just enjoy the hunt and now that we can do replicas I would prefer that route. Does anyone know if there are any mud flats on the East side of the bay or is mainly concentrated on the west side? I am not asking exactly where, if they are there i will find them. I just don't want to waste gas if they are not.
Thanks and good luck !

Sunday evening I was all set to head out of the Metro launch into the bay. Waves were starting to pick up so I just said heck with it and detoured into that marina at the mouth for a little bit. Caught a couple smallies and a big for me catfish on an ultra light rod with four pound test using a 1.5 or 1.75" paddle tail.

5/29/26 fished out of Bayshore. Trolled with #9 minnows. Fished Vokes/Vincent area, got one sheep & 1-25” eye. Moved to the north side of Frying Pan Shoal and got another sheep. Went to Red River area. Got 2 sheep and 3 walleye, 23” - 26” & 28”. All fish were released. It was a good day fishing and the weather was perfect.
Went out of Bayshore today. Big rollers for most of the day. It did calm down in the afternoon. I found perch.....finally. 20' of water. First one popped off at the side of the kayak. About a 10-11"er. Then a 10.5" made it into the cooler and lost the third half way to the kayak. That was it. I ended up moving all over the place, Caught one small walleye, a goby and finished the day with my favorite species, a goat.
This was the roughest water I have fished in this year with waves breaking over the bow all day. I was sitting in water all day. But it wasn't windy and it was fishable.
I will be fishing Shawano Lake for the first time ever on Thursday. Hopefully my skills improve.

Saturday I had the Kellner boys out, year 10 of their annual trip with me. We worked rock areas that were windswept, with bait and predators on a collision course! For the morning we had 22 walleyes, with 11 fish in the 23-29” range, and 11 nice 17-22” eaters. I have openings all summer. Capt Jerry
Decided to launch out of Suamico yesterday. Weather/ Wind was beautiful. Fishing for me was not. Don't get me wrong. I caught a lot of fish. I probably caught 25-30....maybe 40 white perch a dozen or more sheeps head and one small walleye. I explored little tail out to 14 feet and fished as shallow as seven feet of water and every school of fish I dropped down on was white perch. Some schools were thick with hundreds of fish. I fished from 10 am to 6:30 pm. I trolled cranks, I jigged, I used artificial, I used crawlers.
Four trips out on the bay this week and not one yellow perch. I mean dumb luck should have gotten me at least one. I fished as deep as 25 feet and as far north as Oconto. East side/ west side.
Do they go deep this time of year? I realize I can only cover so much water in a kayak.

Went out of Eagles nest with my Kayak Thursday and Friday. I got chased off by a stiff North wind in about ten minutes on Thursday. Friday it was an East wind and more manageable. Only fish I found were sheep's. Lots of em. I did get two cats. About a two pounder and about an eight pounder. I finally called it when the rollers were at about two feet. The kayak handled them well but I got tired of the wind and waves and it seemed to be getting worse.
The wind is supposed to die down for the weekend. Good luck.
Water temps were 58 and the water was dirty. I used crawlers and twister tails. But it was sheep.
