Loyhead Lake

Loyhead Lake is a lake that can have a very relaxing atmosphere and be fun for the entire family to enjoy. I have fished this lake ever since I started fishing at a very young age. Every cast I could pull in a nice 10 to 12 inch blue gill or a 16 to 20 inch Largemouth. However now the fish population has dramatically declined, as in many lakes in the area, it could be from the severe drout some years back, but the two real problems there are one the lake hase been hevely fished due to it's relatively easy accessibility. The other MAJOR problem is the population of northern pike in the lake. Iv'e seen a dramatic increase in the population in the past few years and most of them are in the 15 to 25 in. range and are just devouring the bait fish and also the young Largemouth Bass in the lake. It also makes it very difficult to fish when they attack your fish when you are realing them in, you generally loose everything, it can be really frustrating. Don't get me wrong tough, those hammerhandles can be fun to catch if your actually trying for them. I was up there this past weekend and did ok on gills and came up with a few bass but just about every fish i had to contend with the pike. This lake is in need of some serious help and if you want to have a good time please catch as many of thoes hammerhandles as you can and please CPR the Largemouth Bass to keep this fragile fishery there for all to enjoy. Don't forget to use steel leaders and long ones they like to inhale them deep.
