Like all of the Menominee River flowages, Chalk Hill offers the next thing to world-class smallmouth fishing. I've been fishing it for years, 10-20 times/year, and am rarely skunked. Also, I almost always catch at least one smallie of 18" or more. It's that good! Small, shallow-running crankbaits fished around rockpiles and rocky flats are always effective, as are 3-4" grubs and tube jigs along the shorelines, and small spinnerbaits around the weed edges. To maintain this fishery, we need to release everything, and using single-hook lures makes the releasing process easier on the fish. I even replace the trebles on crankbaits with single hooks--it's better for the fish and safer for the fisherman. I don't know about you, but watching those TV experts lip-landing big smallies caught on cranks with 2 or 3 trebles gives me the creeps. Another hintI: Take it easy motoring around. There are rockpiles and old deadhead logs that are frequently just underwater, and hitting them at planing speed can be a thrill. I've found some good rock structure that way, but prop repair is expensive. Enjoy the Chalk, and take care of it. It's a mini-wilderness, with eagles, ospreys, loons sometimes, coyotes, wolves, beavers. Let me tell you, until you've had a chance to sit in your boat at moonrise and listen to the whipporwills calling, you haven't lived!
