History & Status of the Fishery

Lake One is located approximately 17 miles E of Ely in the BWCAW. There is a short carry-down access located at the end of the Fernberg Road (CR18). Access can also be obtained at nearby Kawashiwi Lodge on Lake One. There are 11 designated USFS campsites surrounding the lake for overnight use. Lake One is one of the most popular entry points to the BWCAW.

Lake One has very soft and infertile water. The irregular shoreline is mostly boulder and there are few aquatic plants. The Kawishiwi River flows through Lake One. There is a rapids at the outlet that prevents upstream fish movement.

Nine gill nets and 12 trap nets were set on Lake One during the week of 6/6/16. Seven species of fish were sampled including bluegill, cisco, lake whitefish, northern pike, rock bass, walleye and white sucker. This was the first survey where no yellow perch were sampled. Two smallmouth bass were observed on spawing beds during the survey. There have been 6 previous surveys on Lake One with the most recent in 1996.

Walleye numbers in 2016 (2.4/gill net) were below average compared to other similar lakes in the area and identical to the historic average for Lake One. The average walleye sampled was 12.7 inches long or about 5 years old which is slightly smaller than the historic average length of 14.1 inches. Walleye growth appears to be very slow on Lake One. The largest walleye sampled in 2016 was nearly 30 inches.

Bluegill numbers in 2016 (8.6/trap net) were above average compared to other similar lakes in the area and above the historical average of 7.5/trap net for Lake One. The average bluegill sampled was 7.3 inches long which is slightly larger than the historic average length of 6.9 inches. Eighteen percent of the bluegill sampled were 8 inches or larger with a maximum length recorded of 9.5 inches.

Northern pike numbers in 2016 (3.3/gill net) were above average compared to other similar area lakes and identical to the historic average for Lake One. The average pike sampled was19.8 inches long which is larger than the historic average length of 18.8 inches. The largest pike sampled from Lake One in 2016 was 34.5 inches long.
