clear lake.... lots of smallmouths.
getting to the lake..there's really only one good way in to the boat ramp...unless you like dirt roads...make sure you got a pen with you because you got to fill out a donation packet at the ramp.

This is a fine lake, but all launchers must beware that, at the only remaining public boat landing located at the lake's south end, a local neighborhood busybody is known to come over and harasses boaters about invasive species and will want to inspect your boat. If you are not comfortable telling this gentleman to pound sand and get lost, you might want to consider other options. Oh, and be sure to bring a pile of milfoil or some mudsnails to dump by this fellow's dock, which is about 1/4 mile north of the landing.

My Dad and I have been fishing Butternut every year for a week over the 4th since I've been a little kid (30 years). I'm telling you, this summer of the week of the 4th of July was the best couple days of fishing I have ever had. We could not keep our rod in the water for smallies this time. We tried tubes, plastics, could not get anything. I know there are some people who won't use live bait and I respect that. All that to say we used live bait after striking out on plastics and crank baits. We caught a ton of smallies on leeches and some on crawlers (both just a hook, no sinker) in anywhere from 3' of water to 28'. Was as much fun as I've ever had fishing. Great smallmouth lake! My wrists and forearms were sore from the smallies. Great Trip! The fish were pretty much 14-20 inches. the largest being 21" and 4 lbs... We've caught some larger ones in the past, but not even close to this many each day. Wish I lived closer. Can't wait to go back. (WORTH THE DRIVE)
