Lake Columbia is a man-made freshwater lake located in Columbia County, Wisconsin. The lake covers an area of approximately 378 acres and has a maximum depth of 8 feet. It is situated near the town of Portage and is surrounded by several other lakes, including Swan Lake and the Wisconsin River.

Lake Columbia is used by the Alliant Energy as a cooling pond for their 1,100 megawatt coal powered plant. Water is drawn from the nearby Wisconsin River and is used to cool the equipment. During the cooling process the water becomes superheated and is too hot to return to the river, so it is released into Lake Columbia to cool. The water circulates around the mile-and-a-half-long lake and cools 25 degrees. Then it returns to the plant for another cooling run. On winter days, the water is easily 30 degrees warmer than the air.

The lake is home to a variety of fish species, including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and panfish, making it a popular spot for anglers.

In addition to its recreational opportunities, Lake Columbia is also surrounded by a variety of natural attractions, including forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitats. The area is home to a variety of bird species, such as eagles, osprey, and herons, as well as a variety of mammals,.

The lake and its surrounding area offer several recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. The nearby Portage Canal Wildlife Area offers several hiking trails, picnic areas, and hunting opportunities, providing visitors with additional options for outdoor activities.

nothing...I mean nothing hits or pulls like a wiper, and its the only lake in the state that's got em! They hit and fight like chinook 3 times their size....tie a 16 inch wiper to a 4 lb. smallie and he'll pull that smallmouth all over the lake!....very tough lake to pattern with consistency, but the rewards are worth the time. skinny largemouth, but I have seen many big flatheads over 15lb.....

A winter jewel in the middle of Wisconsin, and a unique opportunity to tangle with one of the most powerful fish in fresh water in the wiper.
