Rooney has the personality of 2 different lakes. The large bay at the west end is mostly weedy. The main lake to the east is mostly sand bottom with a weedy area in the north. When entering the western bay, go slowly as the bottom comes up quickly!
This lake has clear water and some beautiful pines. An eagle has been nesting in a large pine on the north end of the large weedy bay on the western side of the lake.
There is a camp on the north end of the lake, and sometimes they will have canoe races.
I've fished the lake several times over the past few years. The lake is loaded with largemouth bass, but their average size has diminished the last couple of years. I understand that the DNR may remove size limits on bass in the summer of 2007 to hopefully reduce the population and allow for greater growth of the remaining fish. The lake also has some ok northern pike and crappies. One spring I fished for bluegills, and caught lots of medium sized fish but few that were more than 7 inches. Seems like there are some ok pumpkinseeds in the lake. While fishing, a float plane landed and took off near us.
The boat ramp is ok for small and medium-sized boats. The parking area is a bit small.
