Sweeny is a murky and weedy lake. Anything you throw will get stuck on weeds. The problem gets worse every year. The lake gest tons of pressure early in the season before the thicker weed cover. There are 100 better muskie lakes in that county.

Last year I watched someone toss a blast cap into the water. He didn't see me in my kayak.

I'm thinking of trying out this lake during the muskie opener next weekend.  Anyone know how the fishing is?  The WI DNR has it rated as an A2 lake.

Thanks for any info!

Fished Sweeney Sunday afternoon for some crappies, The wind kicked up around 4 and made things kinda chilly but we did manage a few fish. Only 4 rigs left when we got there at 3. I don't know if it was busier earlier in the weekend but I was relieved. The lot was full with 4-5 rigs parked along both sides of the road last year for opener.

Fished 3-6 FOW with minnows and moved around quite a bit. Not drastic moves but 20-30 feet, anchor, fish, 3-4 fish, then pull anchor and move another 20-30 feet and anchor again.

Not a bad day but I would like to see some more size, will be a great lake to take the kids to in another week or two!

Water temp varied from 49-53 with the most fish being found in the warmer water. I think the first crappies are just starting to come in so the weeks to come should be fun. Another local lake in the same area was still in the upper 40's so I think it will be another week or two at least before the deep, clear lakes get there.

One last note, we did catch a few bigger perch (!!??) and they were relatively clean. All the perch we had caught in the years past were small and FULL of black spots! Maybe a sign of a shift in fish...???

All in all it was a good weekend! I hope all caught some fish and were safe. Season is open, GAME ON!

Saw Sweeney was open so I took the boat out Friday afternoon for a run and to see what was going on. Water was cold 38-39 in main / south bay 40-41 in the NW bay as expected. Tried the east shore for some suspended fish but it started hailing on me so I called it a day. Got to open up the motor and try everything out anyway. Smile

Upper 50's to low 60's today and tomorrow should warm things up fast! With rain for Tuesday, we should be able to find a bite in the next day or two. Can't wait! Big Smile

Thanks for the positive post. I actually have never fished it through the ice. I have though many times in the summer. Good to know fish are still in there. Smile

I was up 3 weeks ago. Must have drilled 100 holes all over the lake and never even seen a fish on the camera. Set tip ups, no flags. I fished for a good 2 hours. I was also thinking winter kill, but according to the previous post, I am wrong. Big Smile I just need to drill MORE holes! Good Luck!!

I used to fish this lake a lot with my dad, in fact, I caught my first ski here. I heard rumors of a winter kill like other people. If anyone knows if that is true please let me know or post to let everyone know if it's worth the time. I live a good 2 hours south so I'm not gonna waste a trip to find out all the fish are dead. Once again any info would be great.
