It used to be good a long time ago. When you have guys going into the creeks where they are spawning and filling 5 gallon buckets full with one dip of there net what do you expect. The smelt used to come in really thick every year but when you change habitat and have an over harvest that' what happens.
Smelt Run , Milwaukee County
We are smelting in Ashland everyday. Take the Prentice st. Landing or go out from anglers all bait and drive towards the crowds. You won't need an extension on your auger but it's close. Action starts heavy just before dark and runs all night. You'll need a tent and lantern if you want the best results. Use 2or3# test on the lightest rod you have and a glow jig with waxies. Action is right at the bottom with steady action till about 7:00 a.m. You should be in 18-30' of water. Smelt are staging now for the spring run and the bay is full of them....
Is the lake front going to be open for smelters?
i heard rumors that the area where smeltfest was held last year was goingt to be closed off.
rumors are what rumors are...
I stopped by last year for my first time to check it out and met SMELTINATOR under his tent. what a good dude. he helped me out by inspecting a rig i wanted to buy and gave me lots of tips.
I took my family to Ashland and we did pretty good.
That truck load was NOT ours!
we filled 3 coolers.
good luck to all
MOON PHASE (8%)
FYI....there is a very good smelt 'bite' going on right now and for the next few weeks off Ashland in Chequamegon bay. Glow jigs and waxies from dark dill about midnight off the bottom in 18-32' of water. Plowed roads make for easy travel out near the lighthouse. Couldn't believe that you could catch them as fast as that but a 5qt. bucketfull is not uncommon and many are doing it. Check with either bait store, Anglers All or River Rock. Lanterns in shanties is the ticket.
