Fished from north pier today for three hours. Checked the water temperature twice because I couldn't believe that last week I had 68 to 72 degree surface temps and today it was 44 degrees. The inside of the pier looked like chocolate milk so I never tossed a bait into it but I did see 4 guys fishing the river mouth but don't know if any fish were caught.

Yes, mussels are having a detrimental effect on Lake Michigan, but there are other factors influencing the pier fishing along Lake Michigan. There has been a reduction in the alewife population that the DNR has been working on for years. In 2016 they wanted to drastically reduce the number of salmon stocked in the Lake. Push back by the charter and business associations resulted in the DNR proposing to eliminate the Lake Trout and Brown Trout programs. This resulted in push back by shore fisherman but that movement wasn't sucessful. Data has shown that the alewife/salmon ratio is approaching the desired number so King salmon stocking will remain in the 800k area (down to less than 1/3 of the peak number stocked in '89). So while there is definitely a political aspect (Business associations charter associations) resulting in the vastly reduced number of near shore fishing (browns) placing the blame on the current president is neither informed or correct. I can remember fishing on the worst days and still being able to come off the piers with browns or possibly a stray rainbow. With cold water from west winds the salmon would come in (both chinook and coho) and the piers would become crowded but we could always find places to fish (maybe not what were considered the best). Things have changed since then. You no longer have as long a walk to fish the north pier and the south pier is also fully developed.
i would go to Port Washington and fish the coal dock over there after Sept 15, where they shut down the pier ,as no night fishing is allowed then from there. Make sure you bring some CHROME finish rattling rapalas, if the alewives are in, and a long handle net ! Early bird gets the worm and the parking spot !
3-4 days of brisk westerly winds , with a modest rain towards 3rd day , will trigger the fall salmon run up river, as not only will the water cool, but the scent of that river with that rain, will ring the spawning bell ! Usually the 2nd week of Sept. , with these conditions , have been my most productive outings for pier fishing salmon, before the no night fishing regulation kicks in . I believe that date is Sept 15, depending where in the harbor , or river you are fishing ! Check your local regulations, and also fishing stamp requirements !
SUMMER-West wind equals low water temp. EAST wind equals high water temp. NO FISH-Equals reduction in zoe plankton caused by zebra and quagga muscles eating zoe plankton which is a food base for shad. This results in gin water clarity forcing the fish to go deeper and why night time on the pier is better than day fishing. STOCKING is reduced because of the depletation of the bait fish (shad ) . With no bait fish the fear is the entire fishing industry could crash. Sad to say but unless DNR can get a handle on the muscles the fishing isn't going to get any better.
EXPERIENCE=Fishing Sheboygan piers since for 36 years. Winner in the brown trout division of Salmon a Rama for on shore division in 1983.
GLOBAL WARMING- 98% of all scientists beleive it's real. Get used to it.
Any prominent West wind pattern (Summertime) in the last 2 years was almost immediately followed by East winds. As fast as it cooled off it warmed up.
Your anti Trump rhetoric is amusing to say the least. Alewives having scary eyes...lay down the grass. Next thing you'll say was that the zebra mussels and gobies were placed there by the MAGA crew too.
The weather switches to a Westerly pattern starting today. It should (fingers crossed) be better for shore fisherman this weekend.
We shall see what is left out there.
Look at the past posts for over a year......are you telling me there has been no west wind in the last 2 + years? I've fished this lake for over 20 years and for you to say trump isn't the problem is like saying ailwifes have scary eyes so the salmon get scared away. Wake up dude and stop your small town thinking and get with the big picture. It's not about you it's about everyone as a whole regardless of what you want in life.
