Fished Old Abe Saturday. Beautiful day and really easy to drink a beer and eat a sandwich b/c I havent had to worry about reeling in a fish. Where are the fish in this lake. I've worked it a number of times and cannot seem to figure it out. I am wondering if the fish hold mainly in the weeds deep to the bottom. I dont even mark fish on the locator. The structure seem great on parts but usually only manage a small bass here and there and the occational pike. Maybe thats why I never see anyone out here...

What part of the lake were you catching the walleyes? I am coming up there this weekend and would love to have some tips on where they hold in this lake or where people have had luck. Thanks for any info!!

Wandered up to Old Abe Thur. evening and tonight . Scored big on the walleye and also hit 6 really nice smallmouth working jigs and minnows around 12 feet, but had to be an area with current. I think the 3 of us boated over 30 eyes. Only kept 3 total for a late night fry. Just got back tonight and had pretty much a repeat outing, but no smallies this time. Cold weather may have put them off. Had a low 40s muskie follow two walleye in a row right up to the boat. Assume it was the same fish.

fished opening day with KKEOTH and another friend. We got about 10 smallies in the boat, biggest being about 15'. 2 northerns 20', and 24'. Only got 1 walleye in the boat that was 15 1/2. first cast of the day was a 11' crappie. Minnows seemed to be better then leeches or worms.

RIP Fred Sad my "pet" minnow for the day that my friend put on a hook and a northern hit it Sad

ive fished the chip almost on a weekly basis during the summer for the last 2 years, if you really want walleyes, and bigger smallies you really should be below the dam, if you head north on 178 out of jim falls youll see a gravel parking area on the right hand side about 1/4 mi. north of the y bridge, park there and walk across the old bridge, go down to the water and wade upstream throwing either 1/8 jig with 3 in. salt and pepper grub or milktreuse grub, or 3 3/4 rapala floating minnows in black or orange, or crawdad rattlers, light rods, light line, very fun, you can load up a tupperware with baits stuff it in your shorts pocket tie a stringer on your belt loops and wade all the way up to the refuge, best times are second week of may to end of june, best walleye last year 23", best smallie 21", probably 3 over 20" in one day during the spawn, all smallies CPR, also try cats at the concrete wall by new dam, rotten jumbo leeches or cutbait about 15 feet off wall in the slack, we had a lot of fun with 15 pound cats on 6lb. test and light action rods

Jigerman,

There are some good walleyes in this lake. I used to fish it quite a few years ago with good luck. There is a big shallow bay just south of the campground on the east side of the lake. If you continue south of that bay there is a good weed edge that drops off into the channel. We used to either drift with the current dragging jigs with fatheads or troll crankbaits along the edge. It's usually a pretty good spot. The whole edge runs a fairly long ways. Good for all kinds of fish including walleyes. Hope this helps.
