Back out on the open water below the Dubuque lock and dam #11, The ice went out of the Hawthorne st boat Ramp this week, no boat docks in the water, take caution there is slippery ice and also mud at the waters edge making it slippery getting in and out of the boats. It was a pleasure to get back on the open water after a few months of starring at the vexlairs, coaxing pan fish into sucking in our small ice jigs. Our fishing started great, boating a nice keeper walleye just under the protected slot size, ( 20" - 27") that our very smart Iowa and Illinois DNR, imposed on our sections the Mississippi river quite a few years back. This is to help protect our natural breeding river Walleye population. The slot limit has been working extremely well, according to the fall Iowa DNR shocking reports. The last two years in a row have been record shocking of what the DNR calls the young of the year walleye class. More yearling walleye recorded then any of the previous years. My hats off to this great regulation. And we are still holding out hope that the Wisconsin DNR gets off there BLANKS, and gets on board to protect the Wisconsin side of our pool 12 river walleye. We fished for 5 hrs and boated close to 2 dozen walleye and sauger, looking forward to getting back on the water and Good luck fishing. Cool

Fished the last few days on pool 12, Water depth has rose a bit to 8.4 ft, water temp is cooling down and today has dropped a few more degrees to 74, water clarity is good, and floating grass and weeds is best is been in a few weeks. The fish are still on the rocks. We are moving around from wing dams to lateral rock ledges and are catching a verity of game fish, still catching nice Walleyes, Catfish, Bass, and sheephead. Our best day last week was 7 nice keeper size walleyes along with releasing two big slot walleyes. Good luck fishing . A side note to the MWC Angler who called a few weeks ago and left me a lengthy voicemail, Sorry I lost your return phone # ,just call me again. Cool

Fished the Dubuque pool 12, 4 days last week. Water conditions are good , water level is just under 9 feet. Making most all the wing dams very fishable. Many of the river fish species have moved to the rock piles catching a verity of fish, walleye, bass, shepheads, catfish, and even some slab bluegills. We are mostly 3-way Dubuque rigging with leeches and crawlers. Our best day last week was with Steve and Blake, experienced fisherman from Chicago Ill. Who unfortunately had to cancel there annual fishing trip to Red lake, Ontario. But still decided to take a day to fish the Big Mississippi river with me. The bite was very steady last Friday. Most all the wingdams we fished, we got bites. A big mixed bag of fish. Finished the day with 8 nice walleye keepers and some slab bluegills in the live-well for a great fish fry. Good Luck Fishing. Cool

Fished in the Dubuque pool 12, 3 days this week water depth is just under 10 ft and staying steady, water clarity is good, but there is a lot of floating grass coming thru pool 12 on top of the water. This makes trolling conditions very difficult, but the jigging conditions are still very good. We had very good fishing this week catching lots of the protected slot Walleyes that were released, the biggest were two, 26" bruisers, also managed nice eater size walleyes each day ( 15" - 19 1/2"). We have a great fishery, try to take some time and enjoy. Good luck fishing. Cool

Fished Dubuque pool 12 yesterday with Jim and Renee. Water conditions have improved, water clarity and floating derbies is best its been for weeks. With Conditions this Good, We decided to go for a walleye hunt. Bouncing from rock pile to rock pile. Our rods loaded with 3-way live bait Dubuque rigs, diving crank baits, and simple hair jigs. (The Bait Shack in DBQ, has excellent selections of these baits and Rick or Matt will gladly give good advice.) The Second spot we stopped Renee's pole lit on fire, first fish 22" walleye she released, Just minuets later Renee landed the big fish of the morning, a 26" big mouth walleye, shaking its head, trying to throw her bait, But Jim had the landing net ready and scooped the big girl for a quick photo, before sending her back into pool 12 for next years spawn. We Finished a great mornings fishing with 4 big slot walleyes all released , 2 nice 19" walleye eaters, and some shorty's. My report is, fish are moving back on the summer rock pile patterns, Its Great to be an American, and on the river. Cool

I had the pleasure today to fish with three generations of a sport mans family. Grandfather Jim, Daughter Renee, Granddaughter Carly. We were able to make it out a few hours before the rains were expected to hit pool 12. Jim new from experience fishing should be good just before the rains, and away we went. Our plan was to stay in the north end of pool close enough to the boat ramp to get in quickly if needed. We started on a trolling spot that has been producing nice fish, wasn't long Carly said I got one. Young Carly won the battle with a nice 21" fat walleye she gladly released for future spawns. Next fish, Carly again, another walleye this time a 18" keeper. We decided to stay with the trolling pattern running the boat on the 7-12 ft lateral rock ledges. The fish were biting. Renee caught two small mouth bass at the same time on one lure, one on each treble hook. They both lost that battle!! We were catching a verity of nice fish, Renee finished the morning catching a nice big northern pike. I figure Jim was right, fishing is good before the rains.

I fished wed, sat, and sunday last week water went from very muddy to just plain still muddy with much less floating derbies, not quite sure how the fish can see the baits, but the bite was still consistent we caught walleyes every day some slots and some nice eaters. I'm spending time trolling cranks in cleaner areas and picking some nice eyes. Also finding nice fish on some of the least current flow wing dams that I can find, mixing up 3-way live bait Dubuque rigs, with casting crank baits, and fan pitching 3/8 ounce hair jigs witch produced the big fish on the weekend a 23" Paul released. We did catch some nice eaters sunday along with 2 beauties 19 & 19 1/2" Rob and Paul are taking to there wives for supper. Good luck out there. Fish are biting. Cool

Fished the Dubuque pool 12, 4 days out of the last 7. Conditions have improved. Water in cleaner but depth is still high with strong current flow. I am finding fish on current seams and the protected areas from the strong current. Fish are hitting leeches and crawlers on the 3-way Dubuque rig, also drifting jigs tipped with live bait has been effective. and diving crankbaits are producing. the Bait Shack in Dubuque has great leeches and crawlers now.(went thru a pound of leeches this week) The fish are hungry when you find them and seams to be a mixed bag. Lots of catfish mixed in with walleyes, northern's, bass and sheaphead's. Biggest walleye this week was a 26" Larry caught , Alex caught a really nice big Northern pike today just as the rain started. Fish are biting, good luck.

Fished the Dubuque, pool 12 Thursday with Dan, one of Des Moines finest firefighters. We fished mostly in the protestant rain. Water conditions are still very muddy and a lot of floating vegetation, making us pick our spots by looking for the cleanest, protected areas. We tried to stay on current seams directing derbies to the outside of the boat. We have found in the past few high water years focus on current seams, and if you see long nose gar surfacing along the seams there may be nice walleyes below them in the same spots. Dan Boated two nice slot walleyes largest 24 1/2" and one huge long nose gar that ran and jumped all around the boat. Good luck to all the Mississippi Walleye Club fisherman this weekend in the Dubuque tournament, launching from Schmidt harbor Sunday.

Fished 4 hrs. in the Dubuque pool 12 today with Dr. Arthur and his 9 year old Grandson Oliver, from Chicago Ill. The water depth dropped to just under 12ft. The current is still very fast and unfortunately still a bunch trees, grass, and weeds floating on top of the very muddy water. These conditions are limiting your spots that are fishable without clogging your baits with debris. We fished back waters trying to find cleaner water and zeroed on spot one. Then found some fishable back water and started getting bites, caught 2 nice size hard fighting catfish. Then a really nice 23" slot walleye that young Oliver released for next years spawn. My report is the fish are biting. Watch which way the wind and current is blowing the debris, then fish the opposite side of the river, it should be a bit more fishable until things clean back up. Good Luck, Still worth the time on the water.
