From Downtown to Silver Spring is good. Got a spawning female a couple of days ago on the fly rod. But jig and plastic is always good since you lose a lot. Try any spots in between and you'll do fine! Big Smile

Bass are not open until May 1st. Quite often, while targeting steelhead, walleye, or northerns before the May 1st opener, you will get a few smallmouth. Nothing you can do about it other than release them. This year, a lot of smallies have been hitting, as we had very low water, and warm air, causing higher than normal water temps. I got a reading of 57 in one section of the river this past Saturday.

One word of caution, if you are using a technique where you are getting nothing but smallmouths, and you continue to fish that same type of water with the same technique, the warden "could" ticket you. E.g. - the guy that was flipping tubes down by Capitol the other day, and catching tons of them...you were illegal. Not worth the risk imo.

But, enjoy the fights of them between the other species you are targeting.

That is where I get a little confused, I always thought you could fish rivers year round. Look at pages 63 and 64 in the 2010-11 fishing regulations. On page 63, they have a section called "Major Tributary Streams to Green Bay & Lake Michigan". In that description, it lists the Milwaukee River upstream to the Hwy 60 Grafton dam in the Village of Grafton as one of these "Major Tributary Streams". On page 64, they have seasons for these "Major Tributary Streams". It lists Bass from May 1st - March 6th.

Those are Smallmouth Bass. Isn't it illegal to fish for them until May 1st?

Nice fish Wooly Fly! I have had similar success using that same technique during the summer with the fly rod fishing for smallies. Below Capitol can be very good and usually I've got the river to myself Cool
