Thanks again, Rob
Copper falls is a pretty cool park, though.
WAY too many stunted bluegill in the lake. These fish were a real nuisance, and it took some work to avoid them. As we covered the water, many really fishy- and bassy-looking areas proved to be EMPTY. We had few sightings of fish as we covered the water, which causes me additional concern about how good a fishery this is right now.
We DID catch a few 12-inch or so bass and one MASSIVE bluegill that made a good accounting of itself on my tiny ultralight. But there is a 16-inch minimum size on bass for the time being to help control the bluegill. This, combined with the small size of the majority of the 'bills meant there was no fish to eat on our trip. We caught a couple of hammer-handle sized northern as well, and one tiny pike actually attached a mid-sized bluegill as it was being landed.
The ranger said there are crappie in the lake, but we found none. We did also catch a couple of smallish perch.
Bottom line -- frustrating lake that seems to need some remediation on behalf of the DNR. At least the loons are cool to look at ...
