For the big crowd of uwsp students returning this Sunday for classes, here's what Ive discovered while fishing Joanis over the past 2 weeks...

If you live in the dorms and want a quick place to go out and set up some tip ups, and maybe do a little jigging, Joanis is alright. Ive fished here 8 times over the last 2 weeks and I've had 5 REALLLLY SLOW days, 2 "Ok" days, and one good day. On the slow days I fished for about 5 hours straight, and caught probably 3 fish total, and most were small pike on tip ups. On the "ok" days, I would be out for about 5 hours and get about 5 small pike and maybe a bass or two on tip ups, and then a half a dozen sunfish jigging.

However, last week my buddy and I had a very good day. We fished for 4 hours and were chasing a lot of flags. Also, I managed to jig up a 14 inch crappie. Lucky I was filming this day and made a video of the action. Heres the link...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viP-EamfYO8

Overall: Lake Joanis works out alright for me because I don't have a car and its only a 5 minute walk from my dorm. However, when I was able to have my buddy drive us to a few other spots within a 10 minute drive from campus we did much better. Theres a few local spots that we pounded crappie and walleye all day and all night, just go on google maps and get to searching.

Good luck and GO POINTERS

Keeper of the gate: how about you worry about keeping all the pot heads out of schmeekle at night and not pick on a harmless fisherman? Uwsp students use that reserve as a legal place to do anything at night.

@klok - from the Schmeeckle Reserve webpage: Trails open from sunrise to sunset.? Written permission required from the director for afterhours use. If you used a trail to access the lake, you were violating use parameters for the reserve. That explains your success out there, you cheated. I, the Schmeeckle Reserve Ranger, have spoken!

Went out at about ten and set up four tip ups with my friend. Didn't have a single flag until about 12 o'clock. Ended the day with four flags and one 18 and one 19 inch northern. Had the line bit on one of the tip ups by what I'm guessing was a bigger fish.

I went and walked around Lake Joanis last night, 6-8pm with a couple rods. Casted around for about 2 hours with a texas rig pit boss. Ended up catching one largemouth and losing 2 more. Didn't have enough room where i was fishing to get a good hook set so they came off. The mosquitoes got to bad and i had to leave at 8pm.

Ice Fished west side of lake, marked few on vexilar, and only had one small perch bite. Was without waxies cause it was spur of the moment decision to go, but improvised some plastics. plenty of ice, and water, just couldn't find fish
