MOON PHASE (5%)
Waning Crescent

Just got back from 6 days fishing Friday... Wind Drift Resort was a great stay, would recommend, good accomandation. Lemmie cabins very comforting.. fish pretty good, got my northerns I wanted for pickling. Walleye ok but didn`t fish that much for, one 24 Half inches. Slush was getting to be a problem Thursday. Didn`t fish for panfish but got a couple nice perch on my shinners.

I went out everyday from last Wed. to this past Monday on my snowmobile...Slush in front of Racine Beach access (that's what I was told by reliable locals at The Alley last Sat.) & by the 4th barrel going out by the St.Park. Make sure you read the regs for limits on a border lake..border lakes are there own animal for sure...& pickler northerns...all spring, summer and fall...the wife & I would go to catch our 9 perch for a meal & she even commented how we weren't getting bit off all the time...pickled northern...mmm...mmm,,,better than herring....I fished last Sat,..drove the sled off by the Indian Villiage....got 8 nice perch which is all I needed....Off to Brews for a "Hockey Puck" & maybe take Peggy for a shot or 3 of Blackberry shaking dice....GREAT BURGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STAY WARM everyone

That's an interesting report Lammie.. a good heads up for anglers Lammie, could save a life thanks. there are known hazards on lakes such as heaves, springs, muskrats, lake ice formations, snow cover... All related to hazards on ice. Good for the locals to inform ice fisherman.. thanks for taking time to care for others.

Here on the north shore, am finding mostly 11-12" base ice in the "virgin" areas, but where the trail was plowed/exposed, it is up to 15". The photos show what the muskrats can do in keeping their breathing holes open - and this is right next to the plowed trail. Anywhere you see clumps of weeds sticking up thru the ice/snow, give a 6-8 ft. wide berth or you may be swimming. They have a tendency to eat away at the ice underneath for an extended diameter.    Northern have been biting pretty regularly along with a few 'eyes. A 29" Musky was caught and released this last weekend. Nothing huge to speak of in the pan fish category, other than the occasional perch tripping tip-ups.

thanks you all for responding to my questions... I would have to be the worlds worse ice fisherman to not be able to get enough pike for pickling in a weeks time, when I come next week.. sounds encouraging.

As stated below, head out of Thunder Bay and place tip up's just above the weed line for all pike action you want. You should have no problem walking out on the ice during the 2nd week of January. Snow cover on the lake will dictate weather you can drive a vehicle on the lake during this time of the year.

been fishing this lake over 40 years.. but on ice mainly in one spot & one time of year, over deer hunting off northshore  campground... being ice is not travelable by truck & walking is my only option were might I find northern pike for pickeling in early January? Also how thick is the ice during these ice making temps? & snow depth on ice? i`ll be fishing 2nd week of January. I raise a toast to the super moons & blue as they may be for the new year with a little luni thrown in clips you all fisherman.
