You can't (to my knowledge) get an atv down to the creek. There are some boulders or posts (don't recall which) blocking the path to the creek. With this winter's weather, I don't think the creek would be frozen enough to walk it, but feel free to try. It's a long way from the access point to the lake though.

Also a few springs on the lake apparently so use caution.

Good luck!

Could anyone give me some information on how to access this lake for ice fishing? I would like to give it a try. Have read previous reports that say you can walk (foot traffic only) somewhere. And other reports saying you need to go up the creek. Does the creek freeze enough for ATV access if that is the only way? Thanks.

Fished Saturday from 10:30 to 3 from a kayak with no takers. I had one small northern follow. I have to say that I saw one swim away that was 30+ inches and another looking up at me that probably topped 20#. Try getting it to bite! Forget about it.

Also, met another guy on the landing that mentioned that he saw some pretty big ones caught and released back in years ago, topping 30#. Max Depth of 16 feet and size of lake with all the food, I wouldn't doubt it.

Heard that walleyes are near weeds by the few holes in the lake.

Still a lot of fun!

my girlfriend and i were up on howell on the wed after memorial day. we took the creek up into the lake and just slammed the fish, we fished from 130 to 630 i got 15 notherns and 1 walleye and my girlfiend got 8 notherns 1 walleye and a 19 inch 4.6 pound smallie. actually she couldnt handle the fight and couldnt find the drag so she passed the pole to me it put up a good fight let me tell you.all notherns were between 10 inchs and 28 inchs, and the walleyes were both 16 inchs. all fish were released.did see about 100 dead yellow bullheads on the shorline and 2 nice sized pike dead also.lake was really clean and clear really no weeds except pads on the way through the creek, good lake had alot of fun coming back on labor day.

My family and I take a trip up to Howel every year. The past few years have been slow. We fish for walleyes and pike and usually don't catch a walleye but do catch some small pike. There was the first year thou. That year we caught huge pike. We had 5 pike on the ice that were over 35 between 5 guys. But, we know better know then to keep all the nice ones we get because of what happened to the lake. I think that was its problem. Everyone would keep any nice fish they got.

good luck fishing, Thiel

The land around Howell Lake is privately owned, only acccess is via the creek. So permission must be obtained before crossing the land owners property. The creek takes a long time to freeze up, and is usually still mushy. Perch in this lake are nice size, but many have grubs in them. There are also some nice northern Pike in there, but the big boys are tough to catch. I know in recent years wardens have issued some tresspassing fines, so be careful!
