I have fished this a lot in the past. It can be really good in the month of May, especially for bass and northerns. After Memorial day it statrts to get too weedy and the fish seem to disappear. I fish it with a canoe and concentrate on the north shore. A lot depends on wind direction and velocity. I hope the carp have not taken over. They poisoned it once because of that, And they seemed numerous the last time I fished there. It can also be good for perch int the month of september, but they close the gates a few weeks before the duck season so dragging or carrying the canoe in can be quite a chore.

You need a boat you can carry down the bank. The gates are open during the summer months. I think it's no-motor all year too, but I'm not positive. I gets pretty weedy during the summer, but I've taken a canoe after bass and panfish and had some success. It's only 3 feet deep in most places.

Went out here to ice fish earlier this year. Had 9 tip-ups out for northerns in the channel. Not a single flag all day. Just wondering if anyone knows if there is a shad problem in this body of water.

Hi, ChuckD!! I can give you a few tips on fishin' the Grand..........

Both below and above the dam are good places to fish. If you go below the dam you can fish right next to it and tie into some nice gill and cat. However, that area tends to be overfished quite a bit. Another good strategy would be to take a canoue up the river about 200 to 300 yards right around the first bend in the river. Along the right side of the shore there is a hole there that seems to be a gathering place for gill, cat, drum, dogfish and northerns. I have had luck on anything from #2 or #3 mepps to plain ol' crawlers on a #6 hook with a splitshot sinker up about a foot on the line.

If you fish above the dam, fishing from shore is pretty good!! Although you can always get a boat out there if you want!!! The Northern fishing is pretty good above the dam. If there is solid ice you can try minnows on a Sweedish Pimple or just a plain ol hook. You might want to stick with #6 or smaller on the hook size. For open water, you cant go wrong with anything from rattle traps to #2 to #4 mepps to #15 panther martin!!!

I hope some of this info helps you!!! Would love to hear how you do!!! Will be looking for your post!!!

Tight Lines....................
