Delavan Lake Fishing Report 7/16/18 through 7/23/18

Even with the hot and humid weather, the fishing remains excellent. On the weekends the boat traffic is excessive in the afternoons, I recommend going early in the day to avoid the traffic.

Northern pike fishing has been the best it’s been in the last few years. The fish are in 20-23 ft of water. I’m finding most of the fish on the main lake points, like the Yacht Club, Willow Point and the entrance to Browns Channel. Lakeside Bait and Tackle has very large medium suckers that have been my go-to bait. I fish them about 1 foot off bottom on a lindy rig. My lindy rig consists of a ¾ oz walking sinker, 24 inch leader and a 1/0 hook. I fish 20 lb monofilament line with a steel leader. To prevent bite offs, you want to set the hook directly above the fish, not pulling the line at an angle.

Bluegill fishing has been a little slow for me. One day I’ll find them in 13-14 ft of water and the next day they’re gone. Most of the success has come off of a single hook split shot rig fished straight beneath the boat, tipped with a leaf worm. The best success I’ve had has been by Assembly Park Point or just west of Willow Point.

Largemouth bass are currently on three patterns. My preferred bite is on the weed line in 15-17 ft of water. The bass can be caught while drop shotting 4 inch Chompers finesse worms or nightcrawlers. The best location for this bite has been by the Village Supper Club, west of the Village or by the Yacht Club. The second pattern is fishing shallow emergent weeds with black or white scum frogs. I fish the scum frogs on braided line. The best location has been by North Shore or in the channel by the boat launch. Sunny days have been the best for this bite. The third approach has been medium suckers fished on a lindy rig in 20 ft of water off of main lake points. Most of the bass caught on suckers have been west of Willow Point.

Walleye fishing has been slow due to the time of year. I’ve been catching one here or there on lindy rigged jumbo leeches. The best success has been coming near the main lake marina on the north shore. First light or the evening is the best time to find them.

Crappie fishing has been good while trolling small plastics in chartreuse or purple on the outside edge of the weed lines in 12-13 ft of water. The best location has been by Browns Channel or by the old Boy Scout Camp on the west end of the lake.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 262-728-8063

On at 8, off at 1. WAY TO HOT FOR THIS OLD DOG. Just drifted the 9 foot line. Normal tackle, small jigs with plastic and a wax worm. Me the WOP and Bubbles. Put a hundred fish in the boat. Most of them small. But a few nice ones. Gills to 9, crappies to 11. Always nice to get out. What I do not understand. Three times this year at the launch I have had guys say, I would love to fish with you once. I say, send me a message with your phone number. They never do. I will admit to losing a few numbers because I forget where I put them, but not all. If anyone wants to go, let me know. Best of luck to all.

Was out with one guy we fished from 5:30am till 11am started in 27 casting jig and drop shot both were hooking up but the net man was sleeping as we only boated 4 of 7 all smallmouth and on large size. We moved and moved from 30ft to weedline and the largemouth were not playing our game as we landed 2 both around 16 inches and a walleye that was the same size. The drop shot was the better bait as morning went on but hay what a morning watched a young lady land a big smallmouth and her brother also landed a dandy ( nearby boat ) both were released. Great day hanging with great company.

Again, please remember that a fish's coat of slime serves to protect it in multiple ways. If we plan to release them, let's keep from lying them down on any surface for the sake of a picture. Thanks to all for healthy CPR. Happy fishin'!

I made it out on Monday morning for a few hours and caught most of my bass on a wacky rigged sinko in the 8-15 foot weeds. A couple of bass were just shy of four pounds. By late morning things slowed way down.

Agree i too stopped fishing it as the size on Largies down Pike sure off their size from 3 years ago, i can catch better bass at  other Lake in the area. Still a good Lake and the Smallie population has exploded over the last 5 years. I told a Guide that at a Fishing show 4 years ago and he didnt believe me. I will fish a few times a year still and hope to be surprised by a 4+ wich was so common a few years ago with many 5s in a season

Glad to see Delavan starting to make a comeback on the bigger bass.  Used to be our go to lake to catch 3-4 lb bass all day, quit fishing there 3 years ago when size greatly decreased, might have to give it a shot again.

Had a three man 5pm till 9pm it was a drop shot in the weededge and the bite was on I also caught a few on jig. We moved till we found them then stopped till the bite slowed then keep moving. The added bonus were a couple smallmouths we also had a couple break off. Well most were in 3lb range we did not find the big girls this evening. Where he caught the big girl this morning was the same place I caught the 6.15lb over 10 years ago ( this one is my flyer) just keep at it and be patient it will happen.
