History & Status of the Fishery
Mary Lake is located in south-central Wright County. It is 180 acres in size with a maximum depth of 46 feet. The lake has an access owned by the Winsted Sportsman's Club, open to public use. Mary Lake has a variety of submerged aquatic plants and good water quality. A full survey was conducted during 2011, including electrofishing, gillnetting, trapnetting, seining, and a vegetation survey. Catch rates of northern pike in previous surveys have been variable, and were below average in 2011. The average size was 2.3 pounds, with some pike as large as 28 inches sampled. Fourteen percent of northern pike were greater than 24 inches in length. Growth rates of northern pike were average. Pike grew to a length of 24 inches in 5 years. Since 1999, the Lake Mary Association has regularly stocked walleye fingerlings in Mary Lake. The walleye catch in Lake Mary was above average compared to similar lakes. Walleye ranged in length from 11 to 27 inches. Average length and weight was 18 inches and 2.4 pounds. Seventy-six percent of walleye were greater than 15 inches and 28% were greater than 20 inches in length. Growth was fast and walleye grew to a length of 17 inches in 4 years. Yellow perch were more abundant than average for this lake type and numbers have improved from recent surveys. Perch ranged in length from 6 to 10 inches with an average of 7.5 inches. Yellow perch are an important forage fish for northern pike and walleye. During spring electrofishing, largemouth bass were captured at a rate well above average for the Montrose area. Most bass were small (10 inch average) but fish up to 19 inches were sampled. Growth of largemouth bass was slow compared to other lakes in the area, and some bass were 15 years or older. Anglers are encouraged to practice catch-and-release, given the length of time required for largemouth bass to reach a larger size. The catch rate of black crappie was higher than the previous 3 surveys, but remained below average. Due to a strong 2009 year class the average length was only 8 inches, but black crappie up to 12 inches were sampled. Growth of black crappie was above average, and black crappie grew to a length of 9 inches in 3 years. White crappie were also sampled in low numbers. The catch rate of bluegill was similar to the last survey in 2001, and within the normal range for lakes similar to Mary. The average length of bluegill was 6.4 inches and fish over 8 inches were sampled. Bluegill growth was average, and fish grew to a length of 6 inches in 5 years. Other species sampled included yellow and brown bullhead, common carp, hybrid sunfish, pumkinseed sunfish, green sunfish, white sucker, and golden shiner.
