History & Status of the Fishery

Bass Lake is a 218-acre lake located five miles north of Annandale in Wright County. There is one public access located on the west side of the lake. Bass lake is managed for largemouth bass, northern pike and bluegill. In 2005, a lake survey was conducted to examine the fishery in Bass Lake. Lake surveys include: spring largemouth bass electrofishing, summer gill net and trap net surveys, and other biological, physical and chemical measurements.Largemouth Bass Largemouth bass ranged in length from 6.2 to 18.1 inches with a mean length of 12.3 inches. The catch rate for largemouth bass was 88.5 fish/hour, which is over one and a half times the median catch rate (52.0 fish/hour) for Montrose area lakes. Seventy percent of the largemouth bass greater than 8 inches were also greater than 12 inches. Anglers can expect good bass angling for fish of all sizes.Northern PikeThe catch rate of northern pike in 2005 (27.6 fish/net) was higher than that observed in 1995 (22.0 fish/net) and well above the expected catch for lakes similar to Bass. Mean length and weight of northern pike sampled was 19.5 inches and 1.6 pounds. Northern pike have been abundant in Bass Lake since 1981 and anglers have reported good success fishing for small northern pike.WalleyeThe walleye catch rate in 2005 was (0.5 fish/net) similar to that observed in the 1995 survey (0.8 fish/net), but still on the lower end of the expected values for similar lakes. The three walleye that were captured ranged in length from 21.3 to 24.0 inches. The low catch of walleye is not surprising since walleye were last stocked in 1993.BluegillThe bluegill catch rate in 2005 (36.4 fish/net) was significantly lower than that observed in 1995 (402.7 fish/net), but still within the range of expected values for lakes similar to Bass. Bluegill sampled ranged in length from 2.4 to 8.2 inches with a mean length of 4.9 inches. Good fishing is reported for smaller sized bluegill.Black CrappieBlack crappie were not abundant during this survey and historically, abundance has been low. Only eight black crappie were sampled during the survey (four each in gill and trap nets). The catch rate of black crappie in 2005 was 0.4 fish/net, which is below the lower end of the expected values. Other fish species sampled included: black, brown and yellow bullhead, green, pumpkinseed and hybrid sunfish, smallmouth bass, and white sucker.
