History & Status of the Fishery

Big Carnelian Lake is a 457 acre, class 24 lake located in northern Washington County. Northern Pike (NOP) and Walleye (WAE) are primary management species in Big Carnelian Lake, and Largemouth Bass (LMB) and Bluegill (BLG) are secondary management species. A 24-36 inch protected slot length for Northern Pike was implemented in 2003 with the intention of increasing the size of pike present in Big Carnelian Lake. Walleye fingerlings are stocked annually at a rate of 1.5lbs fish/littoral acre (196lbs) in the fall.

Northern Pike were sampled at a rate of 6.63 fish/net in gillnets, which is between the 2nd and 3rd quartiles for abundance in class 24 lakes. This was the lowest gillnet CPUE for Northern Pike in Big Carnelian Lake since 1998, but within the historical ranges for the lake. The average length of Northern Pike sampled in 2015 was 17.2 inches. Walleyes were sampled at 0.25 per gillnet, the lowest CPUE since 1993 and below the first quartile for class 24 lakes. Only two Walleyes were sampled in this survey and both were over 20 inches in length.

Largemouth Bass were sampled at a rate of 87.88/hr by night-time electrofishing in the 2015 survey, and bass up to 19.21 inches were sampled. The average size of bass sampled was 10.46 inches, 23% of sampled bass were longer than 12 inches and 7% were longer than 16 inches. Bluegills were sampled at a rate of 6.67/net in trap nets and 8.88/net in gillnets during the 2015 survey. This was the lowest trap net CPUE ever recorded for bluegill in Big Carnelian Lake, and was below the 1st quartile for abundance in class 24 lakes. The average length of Bluegills in combined gillnet and trap net catches was 6.6 inches, with individuals up to 9 inches sampled and 48% of the catch was longer than 7 inches. Black Crappies were sampled below the first quartile for abundance in trap nets (0.33/net) and gillnets (0.88/set). Black Crappies up 10.67 inches were sampled, and 40% of sampled crappies were 9 inches or longer.

This lake is large and somewhat busy. My boy and I went there with our canoe to do some quiet fishing and we were constantly pestered by large speedboats ignoring the no wake regulations as well as Jet Skis doing their best horsefly impression. The Boat launch is steep and VERY crowded. There are only about 6 parking spots at the crowded launch and there is no parking on the road. Directly to the north of the boat launch is a bay filled with weeds. We found it full of nice sized bass and eating sized panfish. We would go back just for that.

We spent an afternoon here for the first time today. The lake is not too big, in fact, I probably would not recommend a boat over 19ft, if you are using the public access ramp. The parking stalls are fairly close to one another (and only about 12), and as luck would have it, someone backed their car or trailer and broke our trailer taillight and didn't even bother to leave a phone number. Sad. Thought they could cover up their tracks by tossing the broken lense in the middle of the trailer on the ground, but we noticed the damage right away. Just be wary if you use the public access ramp that things like this could happen. The lake water is pretty clear and clean. We really like that. Also, if there are wake restrictions, some people didn't bother to follow them. We did not see any at the landing, but read that 100 yds from shore is no-wake zone. We didn't see people following this. In any event, this is a nice lake, but we will not be coming back to this lake for awhile, and especially not two days before the 4th of July.

The bout ramp is steep,Parking lot fills up early on the weekends. Waters clear,With a lot of structure .And one sunken island.
