History & Status of the Fishery
Long and Crooked Lakes are located 3 miles southwest of the city of Clearwater. Long Lake is 49 acres in size and has a maximum depth of 38 feet. Crooked Lake has a surface area of 65 acres, a maximum depth of 35 feet and is connected to Long Lake by a navigable channel. A public access is located on the west side of Long Lake. The lakes have good water quality and support a diverse plant community. The fishery for northern pike, largemouth bass and panfish is similar in both lakes. Northern pike were abundant, but small. The average size in Long Lake was 20.4 inches and 1.8 pounds; Crooked Lake pike were slightly smaller. The largest individual captured during the survey was 26.8 inches. Pike growth was slow compared to other populations in the state. Yellow perch are a favored prey item for pike; the low number of perch in the lakes is likely due to high northern pike abundance, resulting in smaller pike. Largemouth bass abundance was well above average for the Montrose area, but most were small and growing slowly. Average bass size was 9.8 inches in Long Lake and slightly less in Crooked. The largest bass captured was 17.8 inches. Bluegill were also numerous and small. The average bluegill caught in Long Lake was 4.8 inches long and the largest was 7.7 inches. Few black crappie and yellow perch were captured and both species appear to be uncommon. Given the high number of northern pike in the lakes, it seems unlikely that yellow perch will become abundant. Anglers may be able to improve the fishery by selectively harvesting smaller northern pike (< 24 inches)and largemouth bass (< 14 inches) and releasing larger fish. The area surrounding St. Cloud is being rapidly developed, potentially impacting lake water quality. Land owners on the lakeshore and in the watershed should be encouraged to preserve and restore native vegetation and minimize run-off to preserve water quality in the lakes.
