History & Status of the Fishery
Loaine Lake is a 27 acre lake located near Rollins, Minnesota with 96% (26 acres) littoral area and a maximum depth of 16 feet. There is a state owned gravel back-in access located on the south side of the lake off County Road 266. Loaine Lake has been managed as a put-and-take rainbow trout fishery since construction of a barrier dam isolated the lake from fish migration in 1958. Since 1966, only rainbow trout and minnow species have been sampled. Various life stages of rainbow trout have been stocked in the past. Currently, the fishery is maintained by stocking yearling rainbow trout in the spring and fall of each year. Since the MN DNR began stocking yearling rainbow trout in 1987, the average weight of trout captured in gillnets and pounds of trout per gillnet set have increased considerably. The rainbow trout stocking quota was doubled in 1996, but neither catch rates nor pounds per set in 2005 reflected the increased stocking rate. Mean length of rainbow trout was 12.6 inches in 2005. Most (85%) of the fish captured in gillnets in 2005 were a result of the yearling stockings in 2004.
