History & Status of the Fishery
Moose is a 929 acre, class 16 lake located two miles northeast of Orr, MN. Moose is a shallow, productive lake with a maximum depth of 9 feet. The lake has experienced several winterkill events in the past. Fish abundance and species composition has varied considerably over time in Moose Lake, which is typical of lakes that experience periodic winterkill events. Currently, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Northern Pike, Walleye, and Yellow Perch dominate the sport-fish community.
Moose Lake's early stocking history includes Bass, Crappie, and Walleye. However, no stocking occurred from 1966 through 2002. Local residents received a permit to stock Walleye fry after partial winterkill events occurred in 2003 and 2005. Additionally, Minnesota DNR stocked Walleye fry in 2010, 2011, and 2013.
Black Crappie abundance was within the normal range for this lake type and the third highest level ever observed in Moose Lake. Size in trap nets ranged from 4.4 to 12.2 inches and the mean was 7.3. Many year-classes were present and 66 percent of the sample was from the 2010 year-class. These fish will continue to grow larger and provide good fishing in the future.
Bluegill trap-net abundance was within the normal range for this lake type. Abundance increased slightly from the previous investigation and was the second highest level ever observed in Moose Lake. Mean size in trap nets was 7.1 inches with a range from 4.9 to 9.4. Mean weight was 0.37 pounds, which was at the upper end of the normal range. Many age-classes were present and should provide consistent and good fishing in the near future.
Northern Pike abundance and mean weight were above the typical range for this lake type. The sample included fish up to 34.4 inches. Growth was slower than the area average.
Walleye abundance was the highest level ever observed in Moose Lake. Mean size was 16.7 inches with a range from 12.4 to 27.4. Ninety-two percent of fish were from years that were stocked. Growth was greater than the area mean. Mean weight was 1.87 pounds, which was well above the normal range for this lake type.
Yellow Perch abundance slightly exceeded the normal range for this lake type and was the highest level ever observed in Moose Lake. Mean size was 6.20 inches with a range from 5.0 to 9.6. Mean weight was 0.12 pounds, which was below the normal range; but growth was faster than the average for area lakes.
