History & Status of the Fishery

Kjostad Lake is a 438 acre lake, located approximately 12 miles east of Orr. The lake is relatively deep (50 ft max depth) and has a fair amount of development (seasonal cabins) as compared to some of the other area lakes.

The walleye gill-net catch rate was 1.22/set which is slightly lower than similar lakes but in line with catch rates from previous surveys. Walleye lengths ranged from 6.6 to 25.7 with a mean of 13.3 inches and a mean weight of 1.46 lbs. Growth rates appear to be a bit slower than other lakes in the International Falls Management Area (IFMA). Five year classes were represented and all year classes matched stocked years, indicating no evidence of natural reproduction.

The northern pike gill-net catch rate was 2.67/set which is slightly lower than similar lakes. Pike lengths ranged from 18.2 to 33.1 with a mean of 24.1 inches and a mean weight of 3.39 lbs which is above 75% of other similar lakes. Although growth was fairly average compared to other lakes in the IFMA, many of the pike seemed quite robust for their lengths.

The largemouth bass electrofishing catch rate was 6.17/hr of on time and the fish had a mean weight of 1.22 lbs. This was slightly better than the previous three catch rates, but still quite low. Lengths ranged from 3.6 to 17.0 with a mean of 10.9 inches.

The smallmouth bass catch rate was 103.92/hr of on time and the fish had a mean weight of 0.25 lbs. This catch rate was higher than the three previous surveys but the fish sampled were mostly smaller than what anglers would find interest in. Lengths ranged from 2.8 to 15.0 with a mean of 6.7 inches. Of the 101 fish sampled, 61% were less than 6 inches.

Black crappie trap-net abundance was 1.44/set which is somewhat low when compared to similar lakes. Lengths ranged from 3.7 to 11.9 with a mean of 6.1 inches. Growth was close to average when compared with other lakes in the IFMA and mean weight was 0.22 lbs.

Bluegill trap-net abundance was 5.11/set, which is the second highest catch rate on record (highest being 20.92/set in 2002). Coincidently, the 2002 catch does reference seeing many spawners and spawning was not witnessed at the time of the survey in 2012. Lengths ranged from 3.4 to 8.7 with a mean of 7.2 inches. Seventy six percent of the catch was larger than 7 inches. Mean weight was 0.30 lbs which is above the 75% of other similar lakes; however growth rates appear to be below average when compared with other lakes in the area.
Yellow perch gill-net abundance was 0.67/set, slightly better than 25% of other similar lakes. Mean weight was 0.19 pounds and lengths ranged from 6.1 to 8.2 with a mean of 7.6 inches. Growth rates were slightly below the area average.

Tullibee gill-net abundance was 4.78/set. Lengths ranged from 8.0 to 14.4 with a mean of 11.7 inches and a mean weight of 0.58 lbs.

The only additional species sampled were a few rock bass.
