History & Status of the Fishery

A standard survey was conducted on Island Reservoir during the summer of 2016 to update information about fish populations. Walleye and Muskellunge are the primary management species for Island Reservoir. Muskellunge are generally not sampled during summer investigations and are indexed via a targeted spawning assessment once every three years.

Walleye are self-sustaining and have not been stocked into Island Reservoir since 1985. Walleye abundance of 5.7 per gillnet lift is average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Walleye average length was 11.2 inches. Anglers should expect good catches of Walleye, but fish less than 12 inches will dominate the catch.

Smallmouth Bass abundance is above average compared to other similar Minnesota lakes. Average length of trapnet captured bass was 14.0 inches.

Black Crappie population density was above average compared to other similar Minnesota lakes. The 2016 catch rate of 2.5 per trapnet lift represents a historic high for Black Crappie in Island Reservoir. Black Crappie average length was large at 9.9 inches. Bluegill population density was below average compared to other similar Minnesota lakes, but average length was large at 8.2 inches.

Northern Pike abundance of 1.3 per gillnet lift was near average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Average length was 21.8 inches and growth was average relative to other Duluth Area lakes.

My family has had a cabin here for almost 70 years. I LOVE this lake. Good fishing, good swimming temp of water in the summer, amazing views of the night skies and it is far enough away from Lake Superior that "cooler near the lake" doesnt usually apply in the Summer.
