History & Status of the Fishery

Fat Lake is located south of Lac La Croix within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Fat Lake can be reached by paddling and portaging through North, South, Steep, and Eugene lakes. Fat Lake is relatively small, with a surface area of 102 acres and a maximum depth of 50 feet.

Fat Lake has a self-sustaining population of lake trout and white sucker. No other fish species have been sampled in the 5 investigations that have been done since 1965. Lake trout have high abundance, but are relatively small and slow growing. Lake trout abundance in 2007 was the highest ever observed at 19.5 per net.

Lake trout live a long time in Fat Lake. Ten of the fish sampled were 15 years or older; the oldest fish was 24 years old. Lake trout sampled ranged from 9.5 to 20.0 inches and the average length was only 16.3 inches.
