History & Status of the Fishery
Elbow Lake is a 1,659 acre, 60-foot deep lake, located 7 miles southeast of Orr, MN. The lake has a rocky irregular shoreline and numerous islands. Elbow contains tannin stained water with low fertility typical of Canadian Shield lakes. Development has steadily increased on the lake since the initial survey was conducted in 1954. Twelve fish species were caught during the 2003 fisheries assessment on Elbow Lake. Walleye was the most common species in the gill-net catch making up 34% by number and weight. Smallmouth bass and bluegill were also commonly sampled during this assessment. Walleye abundance in 2003 (4.50/net) was higher than that found during the last assessment conducted in 1998 (1.67/net). Gill-net abundance has increased since the mid-1980s, apparently due to fingerling stocking that was initiated in 1982. Few walleye are from natural reproduction. A broad range of sizes were present in the walleye catch. Lengths ranged from 7.6 to 25.7 inches and averaged 15.7 inches. The abundance of walleye over 17 inches in 2003 (1.83/net) was higher than any of the 13 previous investigations on this lake. Eight year-classes were present in the catch with most walleye being from the 2000 year-class (43% of captured walleye). All year-classes present in the catch corresponded to years when fingerlings were stocked. Growth of Elbow Lake walleye was above average for the Area. Northern pike abundance (1.17/net) was above average for Elbow Lake but low when compared to other Class 7 lakes. The pike catch however, was dominated by large fish. Lengths of captured northern pike ranged from 19.4 to 34.6 inches with an average of 23.9 inches. The average weight for captured northern pike (3.24 pounds) exceeded the average for this lake class (2.74 pounds). Elbow Lake northern pike growth ranked in the top 20% for the Area. Electrofishing during June of 2003 produced the highest catch of smallmouth bass since this gear was first used on Elbow Lake in 1995. The bass catch however, was dominated by small fish with the average length equal to 6.6 inches. Only 5% of the bass were over 12 inches in length. Growth of Elbow Lake smallmouth bass ranks in the bottom 15% for the Area. Bluegill abundance (3.41/trap net) was the highest on record for Elbow Lake and exceeded the median for Class 7 lakes. Bluegill abundance has increased dramatically since the mid-1990s. Lengths of bluegill sampled ranged from 3.9 to 7.4 inches with an average of 5.6 inches. Forty-one percent of the catch were greater than 6 inches. Other gamefish species present in the catch in low numbers included black crappie, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, rock bass and largemouth bass. Lake whitefish, cisco and white sucker were also reported in the catch.
