History & Status of the Fishery
Berg is a small, shallow, bass/panfish lake located southeast of Melrude, MN. The panfish population was assessed in 1995 at the request of lakeshore residents. Black crappie were captured at numbers near the average for this type of lake. Average length was 8.9 inches with a range from 2.4 inches to 11.3 inches. Bluegill abundance was lower than average for this class of lake. Mean length was 5.5 inches and they ranged between 3.4 and 8.5 inches. Pumpkinseed catch rates were above average with a mean length of 5.1 inches and a range of 3.2 to 8.0 inches. Northern pike were small, average length of 13.7 inches, and young with only ages I and II present in the sample. Largemouth bass were also captured in this assessment. Three species of bullheads at average to above average abundance were also sampled along with white sucker and yellow perch.
