History & Status of the Fishery
A standard survey was conducted on Bassett Lake during the summer of 2016 to update information about fish populations. Walleye is the primary species of management for Bassett Lake and are stocked intermittently on a contingency basis utilizing annual fall Walleye young-of-year (YOY) electrofishing data. Walleye fingerlings are stocked the year following two consecutive years of YOY electrofishing catch rates below 5 per hour on-time. Walleye were last stocked into Bassett Lake in 2016.
Walleye abundance of 2.2 per gillnet lift was average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. The 2016 represents a historic low catch rate for Walleye in Bassett Lake (previous range, 5.8-28.3). Walleye average length was large at 18.4 inches. About 20% of the Walleye gillnet catch exceeded 23 inches in length.
Black Crappie population density was average compared to other similar Minnesota lakes. Black Crappie average length was small at 6.1 inches. Bluegill population density was above average compared to other similar Minnesota lakes. Bluegill average length was small at 5.6 inches. Over 92% of the Bluegill captured were less than seven inches in length. Yellow Perch are very abundant but small in Bassett Lake.
Northern Pike abundance of 1.9 per gillnet lift was average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Average length was 20.0 inches.
