There is nothing better than Turtle Lake for Largemouth. Today they were hungry and fat. The problem with this lake is that there are to many Northerns at this stage. With less of these Northerns there would be a lot more of the Walleyes. To many predators. I caught most of the fish at the 15-17 feet depth.

Turtle receives an average personal rating as the success you will encounter depends on the species you are targeting. Sadly for some, Northern Pike are plentiful and sizing on average would typically be 15-18inches. For the rare fisherman that likes to hunt Pike and keep their limit, you can do so in no more than 1-2 hrs of fishing time. It is common to catch between 20-25 Northern Pike in a 6 hr timeframe. These conditions are ideal for children learning or as I mention above, a Pike fisherman. Troll the northern weed line in 10-13ft of water with a husky jerk and you and the family will have a blast picking them off. When it comes to bass fishing, the conditions can be challenging. Texas rigging plastics can work but do not be surprised if you feel a strike and lose your gear. Pike love to eat everything and this of course includes all amphibians so chances of losing your gear is high. Bass can be found in the northern eastern point where the depth runs from 5ft to 20ft in a small bowl by the docks. Sizing ranges from 8-14 inches on average. Bass size overall is not bad but any species in the lake have a tough time competing with the thousands of Pike that roam the waters. Crappie/Sunny fishing = forget about it. By reducing levels of Pike we may see other species of fish develop in numbers and sizing but this will take years. DNR stock walleye around 250lbs per year and the lake is scheduled for a fishing survey in 2019. 2016 could be a big year for Pike fishing in the metro given the possibility of increased keeper limits for Northern in selected zones going from 3 per person to possibly 10. Turtle sits in the zone and my request to anyone that fishes this lake is to please keep your limit of Northern and clean them respectfully. You can find amazing tutorials as to cleaning Northern Pike online and the fish is generally a nice white fillet with good flavor.
