History & Status of the Fishery
Sand Lake is a large, 501 acre, irregularly shaped lake with moderate clarity and depth. It is assigned to lake class 32. It is primarily managed for Walleye, Northern Pike, and Largemouth Bass. The Walleye population is currently maintained through annual fingerling stocking. Sand Lake was surveyed in July 2016 in order to assess lake management goals and the success of the current stocking plan. The previous survey was conducted in 2012.
Northern Pike gill net catch rate dropped from 16.44 fish per net in the previous survey to 7.9 in this survey. This is still an above average rate compared to similar lakes, but significantly lower than the last two surveys and closer to a desirable level. Fish measured ranged from 11.1 to 33.9 inches in length and averaged 19.5. The small average length appears to be a result of overall slow growth with age five fish averaging only 20.3 inches in length.
The Walleye catch rate of 1.2 fish per net was very similar to the last two surveys, but down somewhat from the historical average of 2.0. The length of the fish sampled varied from 7.7 to 23.3 inches and averaged 17.9.
Yellow Perch catch increased dramatically over the previous survey from 0.1 fish per net to 3.9. This is a catch rate just above average for similar lakes. Perch sampled were not very large, averaging 6.1 inches and the largest individual being 7.5 inches long.
Black Crappie catch increased from the previous survey to 2.0 fish per trap net, which is the mean for the lake class. Catch rates for crappies have historically been low. Crappie sampled ranged from 7.8 to 10.7 inches in length and averaged 9.2 inches in trap nets. Given the decent size structure, anglers may find satisfactory crappie fishing if they can locate a concentration of fish.
Bluegill catch was typical for the lake and for the lake class at 17.8 fish per trap net. The size structure was fairly unremarkable with all sizes of fish well represented up to 8 inches and two individuals sampled at just over 9 inches.
Electrofishing for Largemouth Bass was conducted in the beginning of June. Bass were sampled at a rate of 69.4 fish per hour, an increase from the previous sample of 56.3 fish per hour. Sizes were fairly evenly distributed between 5.7 and 17.0 inches in length, averaging 10.9 inches
Other species sampled included Brown Bullhead, Black Bullhead, Yellow Bullhead, Pumpkinseed, White Sucker, and Rock Bass.
