History & Status of the Fishery
Loon Lake is a 1,048 acre mesotrophic (moderately fertile) lake located in north-central Otter Tail County. The lake has a maximum depth of 105 feet and 56% of the lake is 15 feet or less in depth. The lake contains several distinct basins, all connected by narrow passages. The shoreline length is 15.5 miles. Shoal water substrates consist primarily of sand and gravel. A DNR owned concrete public access is located off of County Road 35 along the northeast shoreline of the lake. The secchi disc reading for this survey was 14.5 feet which is indicative of excellent water clarity. Previous secchi disk readings have ranged from 6.8 to 11.8 feet. Secchi disk reading can be influenced by plankton/algae blooms. Loon Lake is included in class 22 of the MNDNR lake classification scheme. Data from the 1998 survey documented that approximately 25% of the shoreline was developed. Development was distributed around the entire lake. The number of homes on the lake had increased from 58 in 1976 to 106 in 1998. The number of homes is most likely still increasing. Increases in development of lakeshore has been shown to negatively impact water quality in lakes. Disturbance of lakeshore can increase nutrient loads into lakes via shoreline erosion and runoff. This can result in increased plankton and algae blooms, aquatic plant growth and suspended sediments, all of which can lead to decreased water clarity. However, impacts of shoreline development on water quality can be minimized if best management practices (BMPs) are used. For more information on BMPs, contact you local county extension office. Emergent plants (hardstem bulrush, cattail and wild rice) are found at various locations throughout Loon Lake. Emergent plants such as these are valuable to the aquatic ecosystem of the lake. They provide fish and wildlife habitat, food and spawning and nesting areas. They protect shorelines and lake bottoms from erosion and can even absorb and break down pollutants that enter the lake. Because of their important ecological value, emergent plants may not be removed without a DNR permit. Loon Lake can be ecologically classified as a bass-panfish type of lake and this is reflected in the assemblage of the fish community. Northern pike, largemouth bass, and bluegill are the dominant species in the fish community. The prolificacy of these species can be attributed to the quality and quantity of suitable habitat available for these species. The northern pike test-net catch rate exceeded the normal range for class 22 lakes. Northern pike abundance has historically been high. The mean size of pike is small and growth rates are slow. Only three percent of the pike were 24.0 inches or greater in length and pike attain an average length of only 15.9 inches at four years of age. Data from a spring electrofishing assessment indicate that a moderately high density largemouth bass population exists. Age data indicate that bass reproduction is consistently good. Bass ranged in length from 4.3 to 17.3 inches. Bass attain an average length of 12.9 inches at four years of age. The bluegill test-net catch rate was within the normal range for class 22 lakes. Bluegill abundance has historically remained at a moderate to high level. Bluegill size structure is poor with only 5% of the sample exceeding 7.0 inches in length. Bluegill attain an average length of 6.0 inches at six years of age. Walleye abundance has historically been low in the lake. Walleye natural reproduction is limited so walleye fry are stocked to supplement the population. Beginning in 2004, walleye stocking will increase from 592,000 on a biennial basis to 1,184,000 fry on a biennial basis. The amendment to the fry stocking plan is an attempt to increase walleye abundance in Loon Lake.
