History & Status of the Fishery
Round Lake is a small lake located in a predominantly forested watershed in northwestern Morrison County. The lake has a maximum depth of only 18 feet with aquatic vegetation growing out a depth of 16 feet. Coontail and flat-stem pondweed were the most common submergent vegetation with marl and sand being the most abundant shallow water substrates. The lake does not have alot of fishing structure other than a fast drop between the 5 and 10 foot contours along with the weedlines. The public is allowed access on the north side of the lake on private property from the side of the county road. Water levels can greatly affect the size of the boat that can be launched as the access is gravel and has no ramp. The lakes primary management species is largemouth bass which are abundant. For anglers seeking bass, the average size caught will probably be about 12 inches, however, some up to 17 inches can be found. Large bass up to 20 inches have been documented in past surveys. Northern pike abundance has increased and the average size in the survey was just over 2 pounds or 21 inches. With the high white sucker population, the lake has been known to produce pike over 30 inches. Harvest of small pike under 24 inches is encouraged, as is the release of larger pike to help maintain the balance of the fish community. Despite fingerling stocking, the walleye population still is not as abundant as desired although it is at levels normal for this type of lake. Several year classes were present so there is a variety of sizes available to fishermen. Panfish species in the lake include bluegills, black crappies, pumpkinseed, and hybrid sunfish. The bluegills only average about 6 inches with few over 7 inches observed in the survey. Black crappies are a popular target for many anglers on Round Lake, especially during spring and winter. Most of the crappies seen in the survey were at a length where some fishermen start keeping them, 8.75 inches, although spring electrofishing netted fish up to 11 inches. Brown and yellow bullheads along with golden shiners, hybrid sunfish, pumpkinseeds, and yellow perch were also sampled in the summer survey. Yellow bullheads were the most numerous of the two bullhead species with an average size of 11 inches. Yellow bullheads can also be an indicator of good water quality as they prefer clear water as opposed to black bullheads which do better in turbid waters. Over half of the shoreline on Round Lake is undeveloped which provides good habitat for fish and wildlife and decreases erosion from wave action. Minimizing impacts to that shoreline will be critical in the future, especially if more shoreline is developed for residential uses.
