History & Status of the Fishery

A population assessment was conducted on Greenleaf Lake in 2012 to monitor the fish population. Although the lake has a history of winterkills, none have been reported in recent years.

A total of 40 walleyes were sampled with gill nets for a catch rate of 6.7/net, indicating high numbers were present. This was a substantial increase over the 2006 catch rate of 0.3/net. Gill netted walleyes ranged from 12.0 to 24.0 inches long with an average length of 19.0 inches. Nine walleyes from 17.6 to 25.3 inches long were sampled with trap nets for a catch rate of 1.0/net. Fish from both gears ranged from 1-7 years old with 5 year-classes present. Growth was fast. All walleyes sampled in 2012 coincided with stocked years, although naturally reproduced contributions cannot be ruled out.

A total of 69 northern pike were sampled with gill nets for a catch rate of 11.5/net, indicating high numbers were present. The catch rate in 2006 was 8.5. Lengths ranged from 15.2 to 33.2 inches long with an average length of 22.1 inches. Fourteen northern pike were sampled with trap nets for a catch rate of 1.6/net. Lengths ranged from 4.1 to 9.5 inches with an average length of 5.8 inches.
