History & Status of the Fishery

Clam Lake is a 74 acre lake located near Trimont, Minnesota in Martin County. The lake has a shoreline length of 1.0 miles and a maximum depth of 8.0 feet. The entire lake has submerged vegetation growing to the surface which may have influenced gillnet catch rates. There is presently no public access on Clam Lake, however the Trails and Waterways Unit is in the process of purchasing property on Clam in order to develop a public access.The yellow perch catch rate of 38.0 was high compared to lakes similar to Clam. The yellow perch catch rate was 185.0 in 1991. Lengths of yellow perch ranged from 5.7 to 11.3 inches and averaged 7.3 inches. The yellow perch population appeared to be in poor condition which may be due to competition for food with orangespotted sunfish.The northern pike catch rate of 2.0 was typical for lakes similar to Clam. The northern pike catch rate was 0.0 in 1991. Lengths of northern pike ranged from 20.5 to 24.1 inches and averaged 22.3 inches.The black crappie catch rate of 0.1 was low compared to lakes similar to Clam. The black crappie catch rate was 0.2 in 1991 and 491.4 in 1986. The only black crappie sample during the survey was 8.1 inches and weighed 0.3 pounds.The black bullhead catch rate of 45.1 was typical for lakes similar to Clam. The black bullhead catch rate was 88.0 in 1991 and 0.0 in 1986. Lengths of black bullhead ranged from 4.4 to 11.4 inches and averaged 7.1 inches.Other fish species sample during the survey included bigmouth buffalo, golden shiners, green sunfish, hybrid sunfish, orangespotted sunfish, white crappie, and white suckers.To promote and maintain a healthy fish population, pollution and other inputs need to be controlled. Fish habitat is directly affected by water quality. Nutrient, sediment and other waste inputs can drastically alter the chemical and physical components of a lake. It is paramount to maintain if not improve the current water quality of Clam Lake through watershed management to preserve this fishery for future generations to enjoy.
