History & Status of the Fishery
Wilson Lake is a 650 acre, 36.9 % littoral lake with a maximum depth of 53 feet. Located 11 miles northwest of Schroeder, MN; about 1 mile north of U.S. Forest Service Road #170 (Wilson Grade) on the Wilson Lake access road. There is a back-in concrete ramp and small dock at the public access on the south end of the lake. The U.S. Forest Service maintains a four site campground (no fee) near the public access with fire grate, picnic table and outhouse. There is one remote campsite, with fire grate, picnic table and latrine, on a point in the southwest corner of the main lake basin.
The walleye numbers were well above average in 2011, for this lake class. The average size of walleye sampled was slightly below average for the lake class at 1.2 pound (14.7 inches); the largest walleye was 27.2 inches (6.4 pounds). Forty percent of the walleye sampled in 2011 were greater than 15 inches. Walleye reproduction is sufficient to maintain a high walleye population in Wilson Lake.
The northern pike numbers in Wilson Lake were below average for the lake class in 2011. The average weight of northern pike in the 2011 sample was 2.9 pounds (22.2 inches) the largest northern pike was 31.2 inches (7.8 pounds).
Yellow perch were sampled in above average numbers for the lake class in 2011 and higher than typically seen on Wilson Lake. The average weight of yellow perch in 2011 was 0.2 pound (7.4 inches); the largest yellow perch sampled in any gear in 2011 was12.2 inches (0.8 pound), thirty-eight percent of the yellow perch catch was greater than eight inches.
Wilson Lake has historically had high numbers of large white suckers, the 2011 investigation found above average numbers again. The average weight of suckers in 2011 was 1.6 pounds, below the 2 pound plus average recorded in the previous three investigations. When water levels are right in the spring, there is a run of suckers in Little Wilson Creek (near the access) that anglers harvest, after the May 1 season start.
