History & Status of the Fishery
Ennis Lake is in Ecological Lake Class 4, which consists of 47 lakes in northeast Minnesota that are small, deep, and have clear and soft (unmineralized) water. Ennis Lake is smaller, shallower, and has harder (more mineralized) water than most of the lakes in this lake class. Ennis Lake was thermally stratified on 05/30/2006 with a surface temperature of 72 F and a bottom temperature of 44 F. Adequate oxygen for trout (more than 5 ppm) was retained to a depth of 30 feet, where the temperature was 45 F. Ennis Lake has no inlets. The outlet has barriers (beaver dams, marshes, drops) to fish movement. Lake bottom substrates along the shoreline are mostly boulder and ledgerock, with some rubble and muck. Aquatic plants are sparse and grow to a depth of 10 feet; the most common plants are yellow waterlily and chara. Fisheries investigations in 1957 and 1980 found no fish other than minnows. Trout stocking began in 1980, initially with rainbow trout. Brook trout and splake were stocked in alternate years from 1984 through 2000, when the stocking was changed to a triennial regime of two years of brook trout stocking followed by one year of splake stocking. The 2006 assessment for stream trout consisted of one gillnet set in May. A second net was not set due to the high trout catch in the first net. Nine previous investigations on this lake, dating back to 1982, each consisted of 1-4 gillnet sets. Four brook trout were caught in the 2006 assessment. One of the brook trout had been stocked as a fingerling the previous fall and was 6.7 inches when recaptured eight months later. Three of the brook trout had been stocked in the fall of 2004 and ranged in length from 12.7 to 15.2 inches when recaptured 20 months later. Two of the brook trout stomachs were empty and the remaining two contained minnows. All six of the splake captured in 2006 had been stocked in the fall of 2003 and ranged in size from 19.0 to 20.3 inches when recaptured 32 months later. One splake stomach was empty, one contained chironomids, and four contained minnows. The total trout catch in 2006 of 24.5 lb/gillnet was higher than the median catch of 7.7 lb/gillnet in all investigations on this lake and was also higher than the median catch of 4.2 lb/gillnet in recent investigations on 25 stream trout lakes in the Tower Fisheries Management Area.
