History & Status of the Fishery

Beaver Hut is a 56 acre designated stream trout lake with a maximum depth of 12 feet located 13.5 miles east of Babbitt MN. The summer access options are many, but none are especially good. There are two access routes that were described in the early investigations that have become over-grown or altered by logging activity, are difficult to locate and are no longer promoted for public use. Two other summer access options involve about 2.5 miles of travel on ATV/snowmobile trails from State Highway 1 to the south or west sides of the lake, where foot paths lead to Beaver Hut Lake. In 2010, the fisheries crew found and blazed a new route to the south shore of the lake from an existing logging road. Designated stream trout lake signs are posted at the start of the foot path and on both the published access routes.

Beaver Hut Lake receives very light fishing pressure probably because of the unmarked access routes and up to now, undocumented splake population. Splake fingerlings are stocked annually in this designated stream trout lake. The 2010 population assessment was the first investigation on Beaver Hut Lake since splake were introduced. Catch numbers were below average for a splake lake in the Finland area. The average length of the splake catch was 13.4 inches (0.94 pound); the largest splake sampled was 17.7 inches.

Yellow perch were collected in low numbers, but the average size 0.4 pound may interest anglers. Sixty percent of the yellow perch were greater than 9 inches, the largest measured 12.7 inches. Forty-seven percent of the yellow perch sampled had yellow grub present. Angling on Beaver Hut Lake is open only during the seasons for stream trout (Lakes) outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Other species collected in the 2010 population assessment were: common shiner, golden shiner, green sunfish, and white sucker.
